Museum names Kudo, Kyle ‘People’s Choice’ Award winners COOS BAY — The always popular CAM Biennial drew to a close on Dec. 2. This exhibition provided Oregon artists from across the state an opportunity to exhibit their recent works within an art museum setting. The creativity of 110 Oregon artists represented by 267 art- works in all media of artistic expression, have been on display at Coos Art Museum since Oct. 14. The highlight of this exhibition is the awarding of “The People’s Choice Awards” as determined by you the view- ing audience. In secret balloting, museum visitors and members have selected their choices for special recognition. In a very unusual twist, two artists have tied for the 2016 People’s Choice Award. Coos Art Museum has announced First Place went to both Jean Kyle of Coos Bay and to Sandy Kudo of Bandon. Kudo’s piece, titled “Reef Rascals,” is a carved and painted gourd while Kyle’s work, “Into the Woods,” is a watercolor. As a result of this selection of their works as “The People’s Choice” Kudo and Kyle will be given a two-person exhi- bition at the Museum starting in Second Place honors. “Gerberas,” an oil by artist Lynne Margulies of South Beach, received the Third Place People’s Choice Award. Specializing in wildlife wood carvings, Dale Karstetter of North Bend received an Honorable Mention award for his entry “Stretch.” Tod C. Steele of Gold Beach received an Honorable Mention for his acrylic “Frida Cowlo II.” “Colorful Night,” an oil by Kevin Audett of North Bend, received an Honorable Mention award. Backstreet’s annual ‘Little Dickens’ art show begins Dec. 6 marks the begin- ning of the annual Little Dickens Miniature Show held at Backstreet Gallery. The community has been invited to enter their tiny masterpieces. The highly anticipated show will continue to display through Jan. 3. The artists reception will be on Dec. 10 with the Second Saturday Gallery Tour. Ribbons will be award- ed to first-, second- and third-place winners. In April, first-place recipients will be invited to show with at least three pieces of their work during April in the gallery. Michael Wood, noted artist and painting instruc- tor with Florence Regional Arts Alliance, will be the juror for this year’s “Little Dickens.” Backstreet is fortunate to have an artist of Wood’s stature as the juror. COURTESY PHOTO Jazz Kings to perform holiday favorites A night of Christmas song favorites will take place Dec. 14 at the Florence Events Center when Jesse Cloninger and the Emerald City Jazz Kings perform their ninth annual Christmas concert. Cloninger promises to bring back all our holiday favorites, from “White Christmas,” “The Christmas Song,” “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” to “Button Up Your Overcoat” and “Mele Kalikimaka,” along with a fine selection of sacred and tradition- al songs, including “O’ Holy Night” and “Silent Night.” As usual, make sure you’ve spruced up your singing chops to join in on some good old-fashioned carol sing-alongs. An evening for the entire family not to be missed.
