Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Something in the Blood By David J. Skal Book Review “Something in the Blood: The Untold Story of Bram Stoker, the Man who Wrote Dracula” is a wonderful biography of the man who wrote a cult classic, but whose own story is little known. Author David Skal exhumes the inner world and strange genius of the writer who birthed an undying cultural icon, paint- ing an astonishing portrait of the age in which Stoker was born — a time when death was no metaphor but a constant threat easily imagined as a character existing in flesh and blood. Born into a middle-class fam- ily in Ireland during the famine, Stoker’s early years unfolded alongside a parade of Victorian medical mysteries and horrors: cholera and typhus, frantic bloodletting, mesmeric quack cures and the gnawing obsession with “bad blood” that colors Dracula. In this probing psychological and cultural portrait of the man who brought us one of the most memorable monsters in history, Skal reveals a lifetime spent wrestling with the greatest ques- tions of an era — a time riddled Children’s choir to perform Joyful Noise Children’s Choir will present its Christmas production, “Angels Alert,” on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m., at the Florence Christian Church at Second and Ivy streets. Stoker’s battle resulted in a resilient modern folktale that continues to shock and enthrall. Black Suitcase Mystery with author Gail Downs Author Gail Elliott Downs will be speaking to the Siuslaw Genealogical Society at the library today, Nov. 16, begin- ning at 7 p.m., about “The Black Suitcase Mystery.” Step back in time to the 1940s and delve into a World War II mystery involving B-24 Liberator bombers, the men who flew them and the women who waited for their safe return. Downs, from Depoe Bay, worked as an elementary school librarian and had inherited a “black suitcase” full of 1930s and ’40s letters and mementos. A fifth-grade class took the suitcase on as a project, search- ing out the story of the World War II era correspondents. Downs has compiled the whole story in a wonderful book that she will discuss in this free, public program. Refreshments will be provid- ed. The Siuslaw Genealogical Society is a library sponsored group. Hang-It All art display Don’t miss this month’s Hang It All art display, featuring a wide variety of artistic talent from western Lane county.
