SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2016 Project Graduation seeks donations of bottles, cans On Sunday, Nov. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Siuslaw High School senior students and parents will be hosting a bottle/can drive and making a Beaver vs. Ducks Civil War competition out of it. Cans and bottles may be dropped at Copeland Lumber, 3231 Highway 101, and Siuslaw Middle School, 2525 Oak St. “We will have a Beaver container and a Duck contain- er for bottles and cans the day after the big Civil War game over Thanksgiving weekend,” said Lori Larson, coordinator of the event. “We are working hard to raise funds for our sen- ior all-night drug-and alcohol- free party, and this is a fun way to bring in bottles and cans and raise funds for our event.” In addition to the bottle/can drop off at the middle school, people can also drop off their cans and bottles at Copeland Lumber anytime the week leading up to the event or arrangements can be made for students to pick them up from you. People who wish to donate can email Project Graduation to request a pick-up at siuslaw- projectgraduation@gmail.com People who make a dona- tion will be eligible for a drawing. The more bottles and cans they bring, the more chances they will have to win. The winning ticket will be drawn out of the “Beaver” or “Duck” donors — whichever team has the most donations. There will also be a consola- tion prize drawn from the los- ing “team.” Cash donations are always welcome for Project Grad- uation at P.O. Box 3077, Florence, OR 97439. DENTURE SERVICES INC. COM 5 A Empty Bowls to raise funds for the hungry Buy an empty, handmade ceramic bowl created by local artists and, in the process, help someone who may otherwise go hungry for the holidays. That’s been the idea behind the annual Empty Bowls event for the past 21 years. This year’s event will offer more than 700 handmade ceramic bowls to the public, created by many local artists, with the pur- chase price of $10 each. Smaller bowls will also be available at $5 each. Each bowl will be accompa- nied by a coupon redeemable for one cup of the soup of the day at a participating restaurant during the month of December. Participating restaurants menus and locations will be featured at the “Soup Table” at the event for viewing by the public. There will be a wide variety of eating establishments par- ticipating this year so that many different cuisines will be available to choose from. Along with local Florence artists from throughout the area, more than 75 Siuslaw High School students will be involved in the production of handmade ceramic bowls. instructor Kyle Lewis, stu- dents will be creating deli- cious snacks for Empty Bowls attendees. A silent auction is also available for attendants to par- ticipate in. The 21st Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser opens with an invitation-only artists reception on Thursday, Dec. 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event officially opens to the public Friday, Dec. 2, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and con- tinues Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and con- cludes Sunday, Dec. 4, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Every year, sponsors, local restaurants, artists, Lane Community College, Siuslaw COURTESY PHOTO High School and numerous This year’s Empty Bowls fundraiser will feature more than volunteers join together to make this community event a 700 handmade ceramic bowls success. Additional panel being added to Vets Memorial Wall The Veterans Memorial Park Commission (VMPC) is constructing an additional panel to the Veterans Memorial Wall, located in the Veterans Memorial Park on West Bay St in Old Town Florence. The additional panel will be the same height and width as Panel A. This new panel will allow the VMPC to place an additional 253 memorial paver bricks to the Veterans Memorial Wall complex. A paver brick, honoring a veteran only, can be obtained with a donation of $75 per brick. A submitted inscription for a brick can consist of no more than three (3) lines with a maximum of 20 characters and spaces on each line. Inscriptions must pertain to the veteran being honored and must follow the format as used on the paver bricks of the pre- vious panels. Due to limited space, word abbreviations must be used whenever possible. All word- ing, etc. on a paver brick will be finalized by the VMPC. All paver bricks for the new panel must be requested prior to the VMPC placing any paver brick on the new Wall panel. Application forms will be available only at the Chamber of Commerce office, located on Highway 101, and must be returned to the VMPC only via the U.S. Postal Service. Send applications to: VMPC, P.O. Box 1093, Florence, Ore., 97439. Application turn-ins to the Chamber office or to an indi- vidual will be not be accepted. Payment must be by check or money order only, and must be included with the submitted application and made payable to “Veterans Memorial Park Commission” or to “VMPC.” Applications must include a copy of the veteran’s DD Form 214, or orders showing proof of military service. The veteran must have served honorably or be serving on active duty. Only the first 253 applications received will be accepted. Applications received after this total has been reached, will be returned to sender. Due to Pacific Northwest weather conditions, the VMPC expects completion of the new panel sometime in late Spring or mid-Summer of 2017. An announcement will be made at the time. Individuals or businesses wishing to purchase a donor tile in the flagpole area may still do so. There are still tiles available for a donation of $500 each. These tiles are not for honor- ing individual veterans but for paying respects to military groups, units within the dif- ferent service branches, etc. See samples already in place at the flagpole area for guidance. LCC Florence Center hosts winter term open house Get a sneak peek of the Continuing Education courses and programs planned for the winter term during Lane Community College Florence Center’s open house from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at 3149 Oak St. “The event is a preview of the Continuing Education pro- gram’s coming attractions and an opportunity to ask questions about what’s ahead in the win- ter term,” said Marsha Sills, the Florence Center’s continuing education program coordinator. “This is a chance to come and hear firsthand about new classes and the trips we’ll take in the upcoming term,” Sills said. “We’ve also invited our instructors to come and share information and take students’ questions.” Sills said some new classes this term include web design, advertising design, theatrical makeup techniques, handcraft- ing and oral history techniques. Classes at City Lights Cinemas will also continue with a look at the life and films of a particularly dapper human- itarian. The Outward Ventures pro- gram also features some new and familiar trips with coastal explorations planned. “People will have to come and find out who they can watch and learn about at City Lights and where we’re headed along the coast,” Sills said. “We’ll also continue our prac- tice of door prizes and offering a chance to win a $50 credit to use toward registration.” Sills said those who can’t attend can find a full copy of the Continuing Education win- ter term schedule in the Dec. 3 edition of the Siuslaw News. Winter term registration begins Dec. 6. “We ask that students regis- ter as soon as they’re able and invite them to campus starting Dec. 6, if they need help with the online registration system,” Sills said. “We have computers in our lobby available for stu- dent registration and we’re also here to guide students if they'd like help with the registration process.” FRAA ART CENTER 120 Maple Street Phone: 541-997-4435 Hours Open: Wed-Fri noon-5pm, Sat 10am-5pm, Sun. noon-5pm Classes and Workshops Ceramics for Kids with Ben Cahoon and Alissa Clark Thursdays, 4-5 pm, $10/member/ class, $15/non-FRAA member/class.
