12 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2016 MHS STUDENTS SELLING WREATHS FOR FUNDRAISER Flags fly high to honor vets at Sunset For the past few years, Mapleton High School’s Student Council has collaborat- ed with Granstrom Evergreens to sell the student body and the surrounding community Christmas wreaths and swags. The MHS Leadership class takes this on as a fundraiser for the annual conference with the Oregon Association of Student Councils in Seaside, Ore. “It’s a really straightforward fundraiser for the student coun- cil to do because there’s very little involved. It’s also different because it’s not candy bars, or jog-a-thon,” said council advi- sor Aaron Longo. “It’s not your typical fundraiser and that’s cool.” MacKenzie Cleary, Mapleton High School’s student body vice president, is doing this for her second time this year. “I think it’s a nice little proj- ect that we do — spread posi- tivity by selling wreaths for an upcoming holiday, and then use what we got from that to go to a really interesting conference that teaches us more on how to spread positivity,” said Cleary. “It’s a win-win situation.” Lucinda Longo, the Student Council’s other advisor, said, “All of our past customers have commented on how beautiful and full the wreaths are. “They’re made in Oregon, and they’re just lovely.” If anyone is interested in buying a Christmas wreath or swag, contact the Mapleton High School office at 541-268- 4322. In addition to the main flag- pole, which hosts the American and POW flags, there are six additional flags honoring the six branches of service. The branches of service flags are placed in appropriate matching granite blocks which display the six service emblems and weigh 200 pounds each. They were installed by Randy Clark from Burns’s Riverside Chapel. The American flag and POW flag are solar lit and fly year round, while the flags honoring the branches of service will be displayed on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day, respectively.
