B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News After splitting the season with Douglas, the Viking volleyball team left little question as to who deserved to emerge from Tuesday’s matchup with the Far West League’s No. 1 seed to state. And that was the plan, according to senior spiker Elyssa Rose. “We finished second every since since I started as a freshman,” Rose said. “We came in focused to be No. 1 this time and leave no doubt. Accomplishing that feels amazing.” The Vikings took the Trojans in four sets, 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14, break- ing an 8-2 league tie with Douglas. Rose, along with sophomore Makenzie York, led Siuslaw offensively, with Rose hammering Douglas with 13 kills, 13 blocks and 3 aces, and York scoring 16 kills and 11 blocks. Athletes were grouped, regardless of gender, with the best-scor- ing team getting a plate of brownies.” For Siuslaw senior Jack Pickell, the race brought him his first cross-country win as a Viking — momentum he hopes to carry Siuslaw through district and into the top four at state in two weeks. Along with standout junior Isaac Griffes, the Vikings will likely count on freshmen Kiger Johnson and Brendon See 148 Maple St. Florence, OR 97439 541-997-3441 www.thesiuslawnews.com RUN 4B Looking for Love 2840 Rhododendron Dr., Florence, Oregon. 97439 541-997-4277 Shelter Hours: Mon, Tue, Th, Fri, Sat: 11am - 4pm. Simon likes to play and will bat the ball back to you when you play with him. Hutch is a manx and a bit of a loner, but he will come for pets and ear scratches when the mood strikes him. At this point in his life he is just very content to have a warm place to lay and birdwatch out the window.
