Fishing for the various
warm water fish species is
good this time of year.

After splitting the season with
Douglas, the Viking volleyball team
left little question as to who deserved to
emerge from Tuesday’s matchup with
the Far West League’s No. 1 seed to
state.
And that was the plan, according to
senior spiker Elyssa Rose.
“We finished second every since
since I started as a freshman,” Rose
said. “We came in focused to be No. 1
this time and leave no doubt.
Accomplishing that feels amazing.”
The Vikings took the Trojans in four
sets, 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-14, break-
ing an 8-2 league tie with Douglas.
Rose, along with sophomore Makenzie
York, led Siuslaw offensively, with
Rose hammering Douglas with 13 kills,
13 blocks and 3 aces, and York scoring
16 kills and 11 blocks.

Sailors, Viks tune up at Brownie Run
B Y N ED H ICKSON
Siuslaw News
With both the Far West and
Mountain West leagues poised for dis-
trict competition next week, Thursday’s
annual 3K Run for the Brownies race,
hosted by Siuslaw at Sandpines Golf
Links, was a perfect tune-up run for the
Viking and Sailors cross country teams.
“Being a shorter race, it was a nice
final tune-up for districts,” said
Mapleton cross country coach Aaron
Longo, whose team is the first cross
country team in Mapleton in more than
20 years. “The way this race worked
was far different from anything we've
seen so far. Athletes were grouped,
regardless of gender, with the best-scor-
ing team getting a plate of brownies.”
For Siuslaw senior Jack Pickell, the
race brought him his first cross-country
win as a Viking — momentum he hopes
to carry Siuslaw through district and
into the top four at state in two weeks.
Along with standout junior Isaac
Griffes, the Vikings will likely count on
freshmen Kiger Johnson and Brendon

Simon is a 7-year-old kitty
that is the perfect blend of
playful and couch potato.
He is a pretty laid back guy,
great with other kitties.
Simon is a big lover of
treats and loves a vigorous
scratching on his neck and
ears. Simon likes to play
and will bat the ball back to
you when you play with him.
Hutch has been at our shel-

and he thinks itʼs about time
that he gets to spend his
golden years in a home of
his very own. Hutch is a
manx and a bit of a loner,
but he will come for pets and
ear scratches when the
mood strikes him. At this
point in his life he is just very content to have a warm
place to lay and birdwatch out the window.
