SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2016 Month-long sweatshirt, coat drive begins today Three Rivers Casino Resort is partnering with the Florence community PTA to gather donations of coats and sweat- shirts for the winter. This will give the commu- nity an opportunity to keep people warm this winter as well as have a little fun along the way. Three Rivers Casino Resort in Florence will accept dona- tions of new coats and sweat- shirts between Oct. 15 and Nov. 15, at the Players Club inside the casino. Donated items will be dis- tributed to students ages 5-18 in the Siuslaw School District. For every donation of a sweatshirt with tags, donors will receive $5 in free play. For a donation of a coat with tags, donors will receive $10 in free play. “Three Rivers wanted to make this a win-win for everyone,” said Three Rivers COO, Mike Rose. “The chil- dren benefit from new, warm clothes and our players will have an opportunity to test their luck with free play.” As the weather gets colder, the community can support this effort to keep kids warm as autumn moves into winter. Three Rivers Casino Resort is at 5646 Highway 126. For more information, call 541-902-6619 or visit www. ThreeRiversCasino.com. Invest in Florence by banking locally! Guard Wayne Sharpe, local radio personality with Coast Radio and President of the Oregon Coast Miliary Museum, was Master of Ceremonies. The speakers paid tribute to the Coast Guard members and families at the station as well as the Auxiliarists who augment Station Siuslaw River in the areas of watch standing, food services, pub- lic affairs, mechanics and even boat crew. There were several stand- ing ovations. Henry expressed many kudos and recognized the critical importance of what Station Siuslaw River does every day. He expressed that the community stands with the active members and sup- ports their heroic service, and thanked them for being neighbors and friends to the community in general. Messmer said, “The Great Shakeout is an earthquake drill, but we live on the coast, so our immediate reaction afterward is to anticipate water, so you are moving to higher ground.” inspiring and patriotic speech, said, “Our Florence station crew are exemplary in carrying out the Coast Guard mission of being Semper Paratus — Always Ready! The Coast Guard has great technology, but make no mis- take, it is the people that truly make the Coast Guard what it is today. “Station Siuslaw River has some great members and great citizens volunteering as auxil- iarists to help carry out the Team Coast Guard mission.” Coast Guard and Auxiliary members stood shoulder-to- shoulder with the community to celebrate. The local Band of Brothers veteran’s group sponsored the Challenge Coins and many local organi- zations and individuals helped sponsor the event. But the Year of the Coast Guard doesn’t stop with this dinner. The Coast Guard will be the celebrated Grand Marshall of the Florence According to Messmer, the city is involved in a three- point tsunami evacuation plan. “We have ‘You are in the tsunami zone’ signs that go all the way up and down the coast up into Canada,” she said. The next component is that Florence-area assembly points have signs designating the sites. Messmer recommends all people living or working with- in the tsunami zone be familiar with the nearest assembly points and locate them on the tsunami zone maps printed in 2013. And just this month, the Chamber of Commerce announced that in 2017, the Coast Guard will be the Grand Marshal of the 110th annual Rhododendron Festival Grand Floral Parade, the second largest parade in the State of Oregon. The theme of the 2017 parade will be “Always Ready to Rhody,” as an homage to the Coast Guard motto, Semper Paratus. The third element is the blue tsunami zone street mark- ers that were recently laid directly on the pavement telling people where the tsuna- mi zone ends. Messmer said Florence is one of five coastal Oregon cities to receive five of the indicators as part of a pilot project by OEM. “We have always had signs that say you are in the tsunami zone and signs showing how to get out of the tsunami zone, but we have never told people, ‘Stop, you are out of the tsunami zone,’” she said. Messmer stressed that a few assembly points, such as the Florence Events Center on Quince Street, would have Red Cross emergency shelter, generators and some first aid. She added, “Our Geographical Information Systems specialist has taken photos of the assembly points and our goal is to create a ‘scavenger hunt’ map and asking people to find their assembly points.” None of the Florence-area assembly points are designed for long-term sheltering or for food distribution “They are not meant to be long-term shelter areas,” Messmer said. “We don’t have sheltering supplies for everyone. That’s not some- thing we can feasibly do. We would encourage citizens to have their own supplies — several days worth of sup- plies — because it is going to be longer than you think. “If you have enough warn- ing, bring your supplies to an assembly point or other place outside of the tsunami zone.” Browning’s Corner Rd – Spectacular views of the sand dunes, bordering the Forest Service and BLM land.
