The Board began the meet- ing with two special presenta- tions to students. Siuslaw High senior Erick Kimbel was awarded the Citizenship Award for his academic achievements and his athletic contributions to the school. In addition to Kimbel's award, the board also present- ed a new exchange student from La Paz, Bolivia, Alvaro Molina, with a gift bag wel- coming him to the district. Molina’s host family, Dick and Carolyn Booth and Kimble’s parents were in attendance for the presentations. Molina will be attending school here and, according to the Booths, is acclimating to the culture change. “Alvaro is enjoying his stay so far, and he will be staying with us for the next school year,” said Carolyn Booth The board also heard reports from district principals Kerri Tatum, Andy Marohl, and Michael Harkelrode. The three Administrators empha- sized to the board their focus PHOTOS BY MARK BRENNAN/SIUSLAW NEWS Siuslaw students Erick Kimbel and Alvaro Molina were recognized recently by the School Board. on the subject of attendance and their efforts on improv- ing the identifica- tion and outreach to truant and chal- lenged students. Harklerode told the Board, “We are more focused on communicating to the students the benefits of attending school, rather than relying on the punitive approach.” One of the initiatives dis- cussed in detail was the Positive Behavior Incentive and Support Program. The program has undergone some modifications and these were detailed for the board. This month, OCHS is hon- oring volunteer Steen Gray, who has been selected as October’s Volunteer of the Month for his many contribu- tions over the past approxi- mately 30 years to this organ- ization. Steen’s wife, Averill Gray, was one of the first volun- teers at our animal shelter in the early 1990s, following their move to Florence in 1991. Steen recounted with a chuckle that initially his wife “dragged him along” but, very soon, he became an active and dedicated volun- teer himself as well. Over the years, Steen took it upon himself to learn how to use a digital camera and COURTESY PHOTO Steen Gray then began shooting the pho- tographs of the dogs and cats. The shelter had no website at the time but clearly was in need of one, so he “self- taught” himself again, this time on how to design and build a website. It’s one that served the shelter for many years. Co-workers and supervi- sors describe him as “super reliable,” and “someone who can be counted on to do what is needed.” Steen has continued to be an invaluable volunteer main- taining the computer systems and whatever else has been asked of him over the many years. His dedication to the animal shelter is greatly val- ued and appreciated. OCHS congratulates and thanks Steen for his continu- ing dedication to the animals and the shelter’s mission. Volunteers serving in every capacity are the heart and soul of OCHS. If you can give a few hours a week to walk a dog, work in the shel- ter office or in the shelter’s thrift shop on Bay Street, work on a fund raiser (such as the upcoming Christmas Store) or any of a host of other tasks that volunteers perform, call (541-997-4277 and ask to speak with Sandy Davidson, OCHS Volunteer Coordinator.
