Mittleman took the stu- dents through the proper instru- ment assembly, fingerings, embouchure and care and cleaning techniques. Over four periods on Monday through Thursday, she reinforced Mr. R’s classroom expectations for proper posture, classroom con- duct and respect for fellow Band members. Retired since 2005 from the Sweet Home School District, Mittleman continues to provide free private music lessons in Coos Bay, Ore., to young band students. “I love Band from the utmost part of my heart,” Mittleman stated. “When I retired from administration, I did not want to retire from teaching music completely. The website will give you a bar code so the colleges that interest you can scan you into their system. • “Make it Happen” Local Scholarship Night, Siuslaw High School Commons, Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m. • Financial Aid Night, Siuslaw High School Commons, Thursday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. Local Scholarship and Community Service Night and the Financial Aid Night are open to grades 11 and 12. Last year, our community gave over $124,000 in scholarships. However, there were several career-based scholarships — which could fund trade schools as well as colleges — which were not given out because students did not apply. Don’t count yourself out! 2016-17 Siuslaw School District hours Also remember, these organizations like to give to students who give back by volunteering, so meet with service providing agencies who could use a hand. • ACT Test at Siuslaw High School, Saturday, Oct. 22. Register through Friday, Sept. 30. Go to www.actstudent.org for more information. • SAT Test at Siuslaw High School, Saturday, Dec. 3. Note the registration deadlines for the ACT and SAT. Any student who qualifies for free or reduced lunch can get a fee waiver which only works if you register on time. For more information, go to florencepta.org and schoolathon.com. COURTESY PHOTO Max Perry created this bulletin board outside his classroom at Siuslaw High School. This year he is teaching a brand new class for incoming freshmen geared to getting students set on the right track and with a solid foundation so that every student graduates on time. He will be covering social skills, study skills and how stu- dents can advocate for themselves, among other things. We are hopeful that this, in conjunction with some of our other supports, will help us solve our graduation problem over the next few years. — Submitted by SHS Principal Kerri A.
