A portion of all proceeds will be donated to Peace Harbor Volunteers to help maintain the hospital’s theme of a caring and healing atmos- phere. 3 A Kites fly today for Alzheimer’s Awareness ites will fill the skies at Spruce Point Assisted Living and Memory Care this afternoon in support of aware- ness of Alzheimer’s disease during World Alzheimer’s Day. Spruce Point residents and staff will fly hand-decorated kites, joining the international celebration honoring the mil- lions of families affected by the disease. K The public is invited to come at 2 p.m. to see the fes- tivities. “Living with Alzheimer’s disease can be a difficult adjustment for many families, but through personalized, com- passionate care, residents and their families can find enjoy- ment in everyday activities,” said Harold Delamarter, found- ing partner and CEO of Prestige Care. “Events like this give our residents a fun way to connect with their peers and give members of the communi- ty an opportunity to celebrate and honor their neighbors liv- ing with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.” Prestige’s Expressions memory care program is an award-winning, life-affirming and activity-rich program for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Expressions is a person-cen- tered approach to memory care that seeks to engage residents in a variety of meaningful activities throughout the day, focusing on five core areas of programming: healthy, spiritu- al, educational, artistic and tasty expressions. One painting project will be held at Mapleton School District from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with lunch provided. Paint and materials will also be provided. Superintendent Jodi O’Mara said, “Even if you can only stay for a little while, we welcome all volunteers.” “This year’s Day of Caring is a true testament to the power volunteers have to transform our community,” said Julie DiBiase, volunteer engagement coordinator at United Way of Lane County. “Local nonprof- its have reported in with a record level of project needs and our community is stepping up to make an even larger impact.” Brandy Rodtsbrooks, direc- tor of marketing and communi- cations, said, “For the first time, at least that we can find on record all the way back to 1995, the United Way of Lane County’s Day of Caring has a project in the Florence area. We are beyond thrilled that we have a great project there in Mapleton.” Day of Caring is an annual day of volunteering facilitated by United Way of Lane County since the early 1990s. Each year, it works to coordinate partners across the nonprofit, public and private sectors for one incredible day of giving back to the community through volunteerism. The event takes place each September and helps to pro- mote the importance of a con- nected community. This year’s Day of Caring has grown to include five cities, 783 volunteers, 43 par- ticipating companies and 36 nonprofit partners. Altogether, the hours total 2,984, with a monetary value of approximately $70,303. United Way of Lane County works to support the education, financial stability and health of every person in our communi- ty. On Oct. 1, the popular band will perform at Pop’s Smokehouse in Mapleton to benefit the Mapleton Pre- Kindergarten Program.
