6 F LORENCE F ESTIVAL OF B OOKS • S EPT . 24, 2016 Local authors at this year’s book festival Florence may be a small town, but it has a fair share of writers of which many have published books. And of these published authors, 22 are participating in the Florence Festival of Books, along with a few Florence based book publishers. Authors • Connie Strome Bradley has written two children’s books “Snowball: the Nanny Goose of Sutton Lake” and “LuLu . . . the dancing snail” and she has pub- lished books for others. She is also co- founder of the Florence Festival of Books. • Burney Garelick is a retired writer for the Siuslaw News and has authored four books: two user-friendly reviews of operas, one novel “Big Dunes, Gold Doubloons, Coffee Spoons & Loony Tunes” and a collection of short stories. • Dennis Brennan has written “Journeyman: A Tradesman’s Tale” about summer houses in New England from the point of view of a veteran of 40-years of building. • David Burke has been drawing and writing poetry as well as short stories for 50 years. His two books are an attempt to bring these two disciplines together as one. • Tom Cherones, previously an award- winning TV director and producer, is best known for directing the first five years of the popular “Seinfeld” comedy series. He has written “The Hardly Boys,” a parody of the Hardy Boys books. • Judy Fleagle, formerly an editor/staff writer at Oregon Coast and Northwest Travel magazines, has written four books since leaving the magazines in 2009. She is also co-founder of the Florence Festival of Books. • Tarno Greene has encountered trau- matic brain injury survivors since she was a teenager and wanted to know what “I’m Inside, Y’Know!” means. Many emails and anecdotes led her to write a book with the same title. • Carol Gunderson portrays her life through her poems in “The Morning Porch: Poems and Reflections from a Quiet Heart.” Her most recent book is “Gramma’s Guided Tour of the World’s Greatest Library.” • John Herbst’s two novels mirror his life. “Destination Unknown: The Rogue Life of Jake Meissner” chronicles his wanderings and multiple lifestyles, and “Tales From the Mountain: Colorado Climbing Adventures of Jake Meissner” takes the reader along on these adrenaline filled adventures. • Ned Hickson is a nationally syndicat- ed humor columnist and editor at Siuslaw News and is the author of two books: “Humor at the Speed of Life” and “Pearls of Writing Wisdom: From 16 Shucking Years as a Columnist.” • Larry and Lana La Voie are brother and sister novelists. Their books range from frontier to contemporary fiction and from drama to mystery, thrillers and action adventure. • Sally Rash’s “Sally’s Silly Small Step System” enables the reader to accomplish every-day life tasks through an easy-to- read, common-sense system. Her system was put in place when her sons were preschoolers. • Catherine J. Rourke is an award-win- ning journalist, author, editor, literary consultant, writing instructor and colum- nist at Siuslaw News. Her latest book is “Forgive Us Our Press Passes, Confessions of a Modern-Day Muckraker.” • Jacob Wenzel is the author of two sci- fi books, “The Edge” and “The Queen Tiffany’s Revulsion,” three children’s pic- ture books featuring Yo Piggy, and a lim- erick adaptation of Sir Thomas Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur.” • Boomer Wright is the manager of Sea Lion Caves and writes children’s books. His latest books are “Stella the Baby Sea Lion” and “Stu and Sue Sasquatch.” Groups • CC Writers —Barbara Giles is a retired educator who teaches memoir and fiction writing. Her most recent book is a murder mystery, “The Crow’s Nest.” —Sharon Stiles is a retired mediator with the U.S. Department of Navy. Her book is called “Ham and Cheese in Ten Languages,” a memoir based on travels with her roommate Renae in Europe in 1967. —Pattie Brooks Anderson is an accomplished artist who also has illustrat- ed books. Recently, she has written and illustrated her own children's books. • Coastal Writers — Karen D. Nichols, artist and author, has her newest and fifth novel out just in time for the Festival of Books, “The Moral of the Story on the road of life.” See AUTHORS page 15
