The library has galleries to accommodate many types of displays and looks forward to seeing new and interesting items to share with the Florence community. There is a large display case in the lobby that would be per- fect for showing a variety of collections, crafts and 3- dimensional art. B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Klaus Luttgen is pedaling his way from Vancouver, B.C., to San Francisco with a purpose: To spread smiles and give away presents in the form of carnival medals from his home town Cologne, Germany. The medals were collected over the years by his father, Karl, a well-known collector in Cologne. When Klaus’s father passed away in 2008, the two had been estranged for several years; Klaus was on his way home to reconcile with his father when he got the news. “It was too late to make it right,” Klaus says in his broken English. “Sharing what made my father happy is my way of making things right with us.” Klaus inherited more than 20,000 of his father’s carnival medals, which he is now sharing with strangers during his 4,349-mile trek by bicycle. He left Florence Friday, heading south to Coos Bay — and sharing unexpected smiles from his father as he goes. This year, Shorewood Senior Living is adding some flair to the annual car show, with Elvis on stage.
