SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2016 Forestland classification meeting set Forestland Classification Committee for Lane County will hold public meetings in Florence, Lowell and Eugene to provide information on the classification process for wild- land fire protection within the county. The committee recently reviewed and classified lands within Lane County, and part of the Western Lane and South Cascade Protection districts of the Oregon Department of Forestry, to determine which need protection from wildland fire. The classification has noth- ing to do with other land-use regulations. The Oregon Department of Forestry provides wildfire pro- tection services to forestlands in the county, and a Forest Patrol Assessment on protected lands helps fund firefighting. The public meeting in Florence will be held Monday, Sept. 26, at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The meeting will be open to the public, and landowners will have an opportunity to share their comments or concerns. Maps showing the prelimi- nary classifications will be available for review a half- hour prior to each meeting. Also, the maps, along with other information including written testimony forms, can be found on the Lane County Forestland Classification web- site at www.lanecounty.org/ Departments/AssessmentandT axation/Pages/Forestland Classification2016.aspx. This year’s feature will be the 1985 clas- sic film “Back to the Future,” starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. It’s the story of a 17-year old who is acci- dentally sent back in time 30 years in a time- traveling DeLorean. “It’s a movie with a lot of memories attached to it for many young families,” said event producer Bob Sneddon with Coast Radio. “Plus, it’s a good wholesome family film which makes it appropriate for all ages.” In fact, the entire evening is billed as “family friendly” entertainment. It starts at 5 p.m. when the gates open at Miller Park. “You’ll enter from 15th Street,” said Sneddon. “Since that part of Miller Park used to be an actual drive-in theater, the base is there and it’s strong enough to drive on without causing damage to the field.” The Boys and Girls Club will be provid- ing parking assistance, as well as a full offer- ing of concessions. There’s no cost to get in, and donations aren’t required, but they are encouraged. Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Chuck Trent said profits from the Tri-Tip sales will go towards funding uniforms for the club’s new Drum Corps that will be mak- ing its debut on Veteran’s Day. Sneddon said lots of folks like to sit under the stars in their lawn chairs, covered with blankets. And, if it rains? The show will go on. “The only thing that could derail us, is if the wind is blowing,” he said. That’s because the screen is a 40-foot wide inflatable screen that doesn’t fare well if the wind is blowing more than 15 miles an hour. WLAD offers ‘Fall Prevention’ education Western Lane Ambulance District (WLAD) kicked off its Fall Prevention educational series with a presentation to the Lady of the Elks group Sept. 12, at the Elks Lodge. WLAD paramedics and EMTs respond to numerous medical emergency calls regarding fall injuries in the ambulance district annually. It is always preferred to pre- vent an injury rather than respond and treat patients with fall injuries. Some simple tips in order to prevent falls include the fol- lowing: • Have shoes that are easy to tie, are flat soled and have non skid traction. • Avoid alcohol and seda- tives if you are at a high risk for falls. • Tack down loose throw rugs and secure electrical cords. • Improve lighting in stairs, bedrooms, bathrooms and hallways. • Secure runners and loose banisters in stairways and add grab bars near the toilet and bath. • Get rid of slippery wax on kitchen floors. • Have your vision checked — poor vision causes falls. • Have a medical profes- sional check your balance to determine whether you need a cane or walker. • Have a medical checkup for orthostasis, which means a drop in blood pressure when you stand up. • Finally, ask your health care provider what exercise program is best for you in order to prevent falls. If in the unfortunate event of a fall and injury, try to stay in place and call 911 for para- medic ambulance response. Moving around prior to medic arrival may aggravate the existing injury and make it worse. For people who live alone and are at risk of falling, mak- ing it difficult to get to a phone, it may be prudent to check with life alert compa- nies for a program that works best for you. Western Lane also provided fall prevention information at yesterday’s Aging in Place Expo at the Florence Events Center.
