SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2016 Water Local dry cleaner now offering shoe repair Florence Dry Cleaning, 511 Highway 101, has announced it is now offer- ing shoe repair service along with its daily dry- cleaning and laundry serv- ices. Shane and Christi Schuster of Florence Dry Cleaning have teamed up with Mike and Chris Summers, the owners of Jim The Shoe Doctor, out of Eugene. The Summers have owned and operated their shoe repair store for more than 20 years and offer a wide variety of shoe repair services, ranging from the simple shoe shine, adding lifts to shoes and more. When it comes to men’s, women’s, kids’, casual, work or dress shoes, Florence Dry Cleaning is now a one-stop shop for dry Editor from 1A He will be working closely with Regional Publisher John Bartlett, who said, “Ryan is a great young editor who has been with our company for years and deserves this oppor- tunity. I am very excited to be able to promote him to group editor.” Cronk said, “I’ve lived in Florence for the past eight years and have enjoyed this community so much. I loved to call it home, but I am looking forward to a new adventure in sunny California. I know that I’ll be leaving the newspaper in very capable hands as Ned assumes his new role. I am proud to see Ned get this opportunity to lead the editori- al team.” John Bartlett and Siuslaw News General Manager Jenna from 1A Mills said this solution would be expensive, possibly even prohibitive for SCWD. Another concern about get- ting water from Siltcoos Lake is the potential water rights use of the reported purchaser of International Paper property abutting Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes. “Should the new owner of International Paper’s water rights and the dam decide to fully exercise their right, that could be adverse to drinking water availability out of Siltcoos,” Mills said. Mills stressed the need to create an emergency fall back plan for the 80 Dunes City homes that take their water out of Siltcoos Lake. Councilor Sheldon Meyer said, “I guess I’m not sure I totally understand what a LID would do other than bail out a private company that can’t seem to keep it together.” Mills said, “We would own it. SCWD would get a contrac- COURTESY PHOTO Shane Schuster and Mike Summers cleaning and shoe repair needs. Florence Dry Cleaning is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Summers also have a unique line of fun and funky socks called “Got Socks,” which will soon be on dis- play and available for pur- chase at Florence Dry Cleaning. Bartlett selected Hickson to be Cronk’s replacement. Hickson will be only the fourth editor of the Siuslaw News since 1982. “Ned is a positive force and a natural leader,” Jenna said. “He will bring an unbeatable combination of optimism, pragmatism, collaboration and creativity to the newsroom.” “He has been a strong part of our newspaper family here in Florence,” John said. “He has developed both his writing and editing skills over that time. His community involve- ment will certainly be valuable in his transition to this posi- tion.” Hickson has worked in sports at the Siuslaw News for 17 years. His first story, “Mud, Sweat and Tears,” about “a rainy mess of a game” that Siuslaw High School narrowly lost, debuted in November 1998. Since then, he worked briefly in the sales department and the rest of the time as the sports editor and as a colum- nist. “I also started my column — first as a traditional sports column — when I started at the paper. Then, after about six months, it was sports and some humor, then less sports and more humor. Within a year, it was all humor,” Hickson said. By 2001, 25 newspapers across the U.S. and Canada were publishing his weekly column. It was picked up as a nationally syndicated feature for News Media Corporation in 2013. Topics range from outra- geous specialty coffees to the challenge of raising teenagers with his wife, Alicia. At the July Better Newspaper Contest, Hickson won first place for Best Sports Photo, second place for Best tual amount and the city would get the money from running the operation. SCWD is restricted with the public utility commis- sion, as a private entity, as to how much they can charge. “The people who live here are going to have to pony up and pay for it,” she added, “This is one option — to get the grant funding necessary to bring the system up to snuff in a quick way, or we walk away from it and be prepared to write some sort of emergency plan to be able to provide water to those people in the event (the water system) goes out for a long period of time, or some- thing happens to Siltcoos Lake as a result of this new sale (of International Paper).” Mills said the only place SCWD might be able to get an easement to take water out of Woahink Lake would cost about $50,000 to bring the water from the lake to the road. “Then it has to run the water down to its tank,” she said. “That will involve another lift pump and more electricity. You Sports Story and second place for Best Local Column. “I’ve had the good fortune of being offered, and recog- nizing, opportunity throughout my life, first as a chef, then as a journalist, and now as editor of a newspaper in a communi- ty that means a lot to me,” Hickson said. “Having this chance come along within a couple of weeks of both turn- ing 50 and the release of my second book feels like serendipity — particularly when I look at the terrific staff we have in our newsroom. I can’t help but be appreciative and excited about what’s next to come.” Siuslaw News invites the community to meet Hickson and the rest of the news team at a Meet and Greet from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St. take $50,000 to $100,000 and divide it up over 80 homes, how much will each home pay?” Councilor Ed Scarberry said, “Homeowners I’ve talked to understand there is going to be some costs. They know the (water plant) infrastructure is shot. They understand they are going to have to put some money into this.” Mills reminded the council that Dunes City has voted against a municipal water sys- tem twice in the past. Scarberry said, “I think we need to move fast on this. Water is not a privilege. It is a necessity. They need to have water in those homes.” The council agreed to have Mills continue research on the issue and report back. e c n re o l F 2016 6 A Showcase of Homes TOUR saturday Sept. 17 th 10:00 am - 5:00 pm & Sunday sept. 18 th 11:00 am - 4:00 pm Watch for your tour book in the mail!
