SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2016 Speaker Wave music video to premier at City Lights On Thursday, Sept. 29, Florence-based band Speaker Wave will screen its first orig- inal music video live on City Lights Cinemas’ Chaplin Stage. The event will include live music performances by Speaker Wave and new Florence-based band Good Problems. This release brings Speaker Wave’s original song, “Leavin’ Town,” featured on its debut album “Tsunami Evacuation Route,” to the big screen. The song brought the band local fame as a semi- finalist pick in the Eugene Weekly’s “Next Big Thing” song competition, earning them an invitation to play The Lane County Fair and a spot on the Next Big Thing compi- lation CD. “Leavin’ Town” exhibits an acoustic, slightly folk-rock side of Speaker Wave. Folk melodies, traditional folk instruments and elements of alternative rock mingle, fus- ing together to create an emo- tional indie folk-rock ballad. (Steven Ingham on guest fid- dle, Teresa Mihm on guest flute) The band contacted director and editor Dan Haberly with a proposed music video project, Leavin’ Town being the likely candidate. Haberly, having shot still photography for the band in the past, was intrigued by the prospect of a video collabora- tion. Shooting commenced and, with much local support, the video was completed. The combination of ethereal cinematography from Haberly and the smooth yet slightly angsty lyrics of Speaker Wave’s original song offer an apt portrayal of a somber tale about a guy who believes his circumstances will improve by “leaving town.” The video was all shot, edit- ed and produced locally in the Florence area. Tickets are $4 and available at City Lights Cinemas or online at www.citylightscine mas.com. Doors open at 7:15 p.m., and the show is from 7:30 to 10 p.m. A LICE B RAUER C HRISTIAN P RESCHOOL ENROLLING NOW We are a Christian based preschool whose goal is to provide excellence in education and opportunities for faith formation in a loving, safe environment for every child. • Open Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 5:30 pm • Ages 3 years - 6 years are accepted (must be potty trained) • Off ering 3-day and 2-day rates. • Certifi ed Teachers and state licensed Meggan Haslett, Director 541-999-6026 or email: abchristianprek@gmail.com Eugene Foot and Ankle Health Center Podiatric Physicians & Surgeons We offer comprehensive, conservative, and surgical management of all of your foot and ankle needs. www.eugenefootandankle.com Florence 4480 Highway 101 Building G Mon/Tues (541) 997-2319 Eugene 1680 Chambers St. (541) 683-3351 Library Tidings News about the Siuslaw Public Library Library Tidings, a regular feature of the Siuslaw News, features news about upcoming Siuslaw Public Library pro- grams for adults and children, new books and videos, and other library news of interest to the community. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Three Minutes in Poland By Glenn Kurtz Book review by Kevin Mittge When author Glenn Kurtz stumbled upon an old family film in his parents’ closet in Florida, he had no inkling of its historical significance or of the impact it would have on his life. The film, shot long before by his grandfather on a sightseeing trip to Europe, includes shaky footage of Paris and the Swiss Alps. Astonishingly, the elder Kurtz also captured on color 16mm film the only known moving images of the thriving, predomi- nantly Jewish town of Nasielsk, Poland, shortly before the com- munity’s destruction in the Holocaust. In his book “Three Minutes in Poland: Discovering a Lost World in a 1938 Family Film,” Kurtz details his remarkable journey to learn everything he can about Nasielsk and the peo- ple who appeared in his grandfa- ther’s film. In restoring the film and pro- viding a copy to the U.S. Holocaust Museum, remarkable stories begin to emerge. A young woman views the film and recognizes her grandfather as a young boy; an elderly refugee in Florida helps Kurtz locate more survivors of the village, includ- We’ll help the pieces fall into place Have you always been inter- ested in acting and the theatre?
