For the invitational, which included more than 200 schools in the varsity divi- sion, Mans was the lone entry for the OFF AND RUNNING Vikings in the varsity girls race, where she managed to finish 10th with a sea- son-opening 5,000-meter time of 19:25.6. In a field that large and running alone, Siuslaw coach Chris Johnson said Mans ran well. “It was a big, highly competitive meet,” said Johnson. “As a coach, you’re always interested to see how your runners react to that level of com- petition. “We won’t see anything this big again for quite a while.” The Viking varsity boys had six run- ners on the course, finishing 24th out of 25 teams. Nothing could have prepared our guys After opening the season with a lopsided 68-14 win over South Wasco County a week earlier, the Mapleton football team was on the road Friday to face Elkton in a matchup that proved to be a little more equal. Once again, senior quarterback and runningback Hunter Simington was a force on the gridiron, carrying the ball 23 times for 215 yards against the Elks, includi- ung four touchdowns to lead the Sailors in the nonleague game. However, Elkton was able to hold off the Sailors for a 56-34 win. Friday, the Sailors will be on the road again, this time at Falls City, beginning at 7 p.m. On the Bite A WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FOR THE LOCAL REGION 148 Maple St. Florence, OR 97439 541-997-3441 www.thesiuslawnews.com See VIKS 3C www.dfw.state.or.us/RR ALSEA RIVER: Cutthroat, Chinook The Alsea River and bay is open for Chinook salmon through Dec. 31.
