However, with the significant increase in new construc- tion over the last year or so, local builders felt the time was right to bring back the Showcase of Homes Tour. The free event will take place this weekend, Sept. 17 and 18, and is sponsored by The Shippin’ Shack and Premier Sponsor, Brian Lacouture Building, LLC. The Showcase of Homes Tour offers a diverse selection of homes in various price ranges, sizes and locations throughout Florence. The common thread is the quality and craftsmanship found in each home. Watch your mailbox for this years’ Showcase of Homes Tour Book with a map to each of the homes. www.TheSiuslawNews.com KEN MCDOUGAL PHOTO “Sweet Creek” by photographer Ken McDougal Local, nationally acclaimed photographer Ken McDougal is the featured artist in the lobby of Oregon Pacific Bank for the month of September. In his Proclamation, he states: “Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in American men, and too many men and their families feel the pain and grief it brings. As a country, we must do everything in our power to support men who are battling prostate cancer, deliver the care and treatment they need, and defeat this devastating disease. During National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we remember all the men who lost their lives to this disease, and resolve to reach a tomorrow where prostate cancer is no longer a threat to our sons and grandsons. In 2016, approximately 180,000 men will be diagnosed, and 26,000 men will lose their battle with prostate cancer.” Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in men and the second leading cause of cancer death in men (behind lung cancer). Us TOO Florence, your local on-call-365- days-per-year Prostate Cancer Education and Support Chapter of Us TOO International, serves the Oregon Coast with participants hailing from Yachats to Bandon plus Florence and our nearby local communities. Rarely does a month go by that one or more men, newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, aren’t welcomed to their first ever Us TOO Florence meeting. Since 2001, over 255 men and 125 spouses/loved ones have attended Us TOO Florence meetings; 179 of those men have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, while 32 of them have died from the disease. Us TOO Florence participants know that early detection before symptoms develop (asymptomatic) is the key to survival. Prostate cancer that is diagnosed after symptoms have developed (symptomatic) is most often incurable, in spite of the recent advances in treatment of advanced prostate cancer. These advances are able to extend life, but usually with a decidedly lesser quality of life. None of the advancements are able to provide the knock-out punch and provide a cure. Mayor Joe Henry has also proclaimed September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Florence. His Proclamation states that five year survival rates are nearly 100 percent among patients diagnosed with localized or regional disease and only 28 percent among patients diagnosed with metastatic disease. Emphasizing early detection, Mayor Henry notes that Us TOO Florence urges all men to establish a baseline PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test along with DRE (digital rectal examination) and risk assessment at age 40. Finally, Mayor Henry urges all men in Florence to take advantage of the information available at Us TOO Florence meetings, become aware of their own risks of prostate cancer, talk to their health providers, and get screened for the disease. Us TOO Florence has over 20 Personal Prostate Cancer Journey binders placed throughout Florence and reaches an even wider audience with its www.ustooflorence. org <http://www.ustooflorence.org/> website. The binders and website both contain, in addition to other information, the personal journeys of men diagnosed with prostate cancer who describe their experiences from diagnosis through treatment. Simply go to the website, click on Personal Journeys and then the name of one of the men to read his particular Journey. They are listed according to the treatment(s) they received. Us TOO Florence’s MISSION is to help men and their families make informed decisions about prostate cancer detection and treatment (or no treatment) through support, education and advocacy. Our mission is NOT to tell men and their families “what” to do. It IS to provide all the information men and their families need to make their own informed decision and then support them in their choice. Us TOO Florence has the invaluable presence of Urologist Dr. Bryan Mehlhaff at our evening meetings and Urologist Dr. Roger McKimmy at our lunch meetings. Dr. Mehlhaff has been meeting with us for 12 years and Dr. McKimmy since January 2016. Come with questions – leave with answers.
