The creative team that brought “Les Misérables” to local audiences has gathered a stellar cast of new and old faces to bring Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic comic opera of a band of pirates, faithful daughters and a very modern major general in a comedy of epic proportions. “Pirates of Penzance” is a hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers and an eccentric major-general. The story concerns Frederic, who, having com- pleted his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. However, Frederic learns he only has a birthday each leap year, and that he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully. Filled with boisterous songs, glib lines and an all-star cast, this production is not a show to be missed. Last Resort Players will play “Pirates of Penzance” at Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., the weekends of Nov. 4 to 6 and 11 to 13, with 7 p.m. evening and 2 p.m. matinee performances. Tickets will soon be available at event center.org. For more information about the production, go to lastresort players.org. CYAN MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK A WARD S PONSOR September’s song sambas in splendor FloTones ‘Latin Rhythms’ concert review B Y B URNEY G ARELICK There were no quiet nights of quiet stars at Hernando’s Hideaway when Florence's irrepressible FloTones took the festive stage on the flat floor at the Florence Events Center Sept. 10 for an extravaganza of Latin rhythms. Perhaps it was a desire to reprise the dazzling gymnastics of the Rio Olympics or maybe it was a box of tempting arrangements of Latin songs. Whatever the inspiration, the FloTones vocal jazz ensemble and the FloTones Jazz Quartet presented an exciting concert of infectious delight as lumi- nous as the colors of autumn leaves. Performers and songs — they got rhythm and it’s fasci- nating, like the Gershwins said in the opening number. A litany of lyrics steeped in Latin rhythm did the bossa nova, the mambo and the samba. Cole Porter added a Latin tinge with his classic “Night and Day” and “Begin the Beguine.” Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Desafinado” rocked in tune and on key, and “Corcoravado” (of those quiet nights) sim- mered soulfully. “Brazil” bounced like a beach volleyball match, and “Malaguena” mel- lowed the drama with haunting refrain in a solo by exceptional keyboard artist Jennifer Weir, member of the jazz quartet. These were just some of the songs that flowed with infec- tious rhythm from the 10 singers, six women and four men — sopranos, altos, tenors and basses — who cooked their harmonies into a confection that was sweet and hot. Singers were: Jan Kinslow, Jeanni Sanders, Judy Matheny, Kate McBroom-Redwine, Carol Foster, Lori Janowski, John Culp, John Pohlman, Ken Janowski and David Mills. Voice Your Opinion! EDITOR@ THESIUSLAWNEWS.COM tapped toes, chair danced and took to their feet to strut their stuff. The FloTones went for the gold to ride the Latin Rhythms to the finish line. September’s song never sounded so good! The show also plays Friday and Saturday, Sept, 16 and 17, at Class Act Theatre. Want Breaking News? More Photos? www.TheSiuslawNews.com " !" "# %'" 1+11*5 $"!" I WILL HEAR Weekly Family Suppers return tonight Community Suppers return tonight, when a group of local churches will be offering free suppers from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. each Wednesday. Meals are for families, sin- gles, old and young. They are not connected to the pro- grams of the churches but are rather an opportunity for the Florence community to gath- er and enjoy a free meal. Art activities for children and youth will be available after the meals, board games and space for discussion for adults is possible. September meals are host- ed at the Presbyterian Church at 3996 Highway 101; in October, meals will be at the New Life Lutheran Church at 25th and Spruce streets. Other churches sponsoring these meals include Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and Florence United Methodist Church. Soulful solos, comic duets, and ensemble revelry varied the melodies and moods, spiced by the affable emceeing of Florence’s gregarious Annie Schmidt. In addition to the phenome- nal Weir, the jazz quartet fea- tured gorgeous trumpet and flugelhorn by Ron Green and paradiddling percussion by Nate Kaplan, both members of Miles To Go jazz quartet. Lynette Kristine played acoustic bass, with Nancy Kromer standing by to sub at the next performance. The FloTones Jazz Quartet was featured on a couple of cool tunes, and Weir took a couple of spectacular solos. “Besame Mucho!” The music was contagious. The singers became more and more animated, putting full body English into the Spanish and Portuguese lyrics, while audi- ence members snapped fingers, "#!, , %# ,!
