2 B SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 2016 Memorial golf scramble tees off in September REEDSPORT — The annu- al Bill Humphreys Memorial Golf Scramble will take place Sunday, Sept. 4, at Reedsport’s Forest Hills Country Club. This is the 22nd year for the event, which benefits high school and junior golf pro- grams in Reedsport, and is largely responsible for the con- tinued existence of these pro- grams. The nine-hole event typical- ly draws about 90 golfers. Players of all skill levels are welcome, men and women, novice and junior golfers. The event tees off at 2 p.m., with the scramble format keep- ing the duration to about three hours. Entry fee is $30 per player, which includes a post-match meal. Chances for raffle prizes, including sporting gear, gift baskets, casino packages and golf outings at regional cours- es, will also be available for purchase. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to take advan- tage of these opportunities. Local businesses, organiza- tions and groups can also par- ticipate through a team spon- sorship of $100. Sponsorship includes team name, one com- plimentary team participant, as well as on-course signage at the event. Full or partial teams, or indi- viduals, are asked to signup in advance. The event features three dif- ferent rides on low-traffic roads: 25 miles/1,100 vertical feet ($30); 40 miles/2,000 ver- tical feet ($40); and 100km/62.5 miles/4,000 verti- cal feet ($50). All three routes follow the banks of the Rogue River and cross two bridges in this wild and remote southwestern cor- ner of Oregon. Both the 40- mile and the 100km rides fin- ish along the Pacific Ocean, with panoramic views of beaches, sea stacks and rugged coastline. Each rider’s entrance fee includes a free ticket ($15 value) to the Gold Beach Brew Fest, which takes place the same day as Bike the Rogue. The Brew Fest offers a wide selection of microbrews from all over Oregon, and musicians performing on two stages until 10 p.m. The Rotary Club of Gold Beach, assisted by community volunteers, provides a conti- nental breakfast of toasted English muffins, bagels, peanut butter, cream cheese, fruit and coffee at the start of the event for all registered rid- ers, and generous, well-stocked rest stations every 7 to 15 miles along the route. At the end of the ride, each cyclist is treated to a rootbeer float. Bathrooms (with flush toilets and sinks!) are available in Buffington Park at the start and finish of the event, as well as at the 11-mile point, 32-mile point, and 51-mile point. Registration starts at 7 a.m. in Buffington Park. The entrance to the park is 3 blocks east of Highway 101 on Gauntlet Street in Gold Beach. Anyone pre-registering with a postmark before Sept. 1 receives $5 off the entry fee, per rider.
