GEAR UP FOR ANNUAL
GOLD BEACH — The sce-
nic seventh annual Bike the
Rogue (BTR) road bicycling
event takes place Saturday,
Sept. 10, at Buffington Park in
Gold Beach.
The event features three dif-
ferent rides on low-traffic
roads: 25 miles/1,100 vertical
feet ($30); 40 miles/2,000 ver-
tical
feet
($40);
and
100km/62.5 miles/4,000 verti-
cal feet ($50).
All three routes follow the
banks of the Rogue River and
cross two bridges in this wild
and remote southwestern cor-
ner of Oregon. Both the 40-
mile and the 100km rides fin-
ish along the Pacific Ocean,
with panoramic views of
beaches, sea stacks and rugged
coastline.
Each rider’s entrance fee
includes a free ticket ($15
value) to the Gold Beach Brew
Fest, which takes place the
same day as Bike the Rogue.
The Brew Fest offers a wide
selection of microbrews from
all over Oregon, and musicians
performing on two stages until
10 p.m.
The Rotary Club of Gold
Beach, assisted by community
volunteers, provides a conti-
nental breakfast of toasted
English muffins, bagels,
peanut butter, cream cheese,
fruit and coffee at the start of
the event for all registered rid-
ers, and generous, well-stocked
rest stations every 7 to 15 miles
along the route.
At the end of the ride, each
cyclist is treated to a rootbeer
float. Bathrooms (with flush
toilets and sinks!) are available
in Buffington Park at the start
and finish of the event, as well
as at the 11-mile point, 32-mile
point, and 51-mile point.
