8 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JULY 16, 2016 Local artist Hillsbery offers free watercolor demonstration Florence resident and nationally known watercolor artist and teacher, Carole Hillsbery, has announced a free absolute beginners watercolor demonstration on Monday, July 18, from 1 to 3 p.m., in her home studio for those people interested in exploring water- color as a medium. Hillsbery has a passion for bright, beautiful color, and loves to splatter, splash and move paint on her paper. Those who sit in front might even wear a splash or two of her paints. Such jubilation is at the core of Hillsbery’s artistry and she loves nothing better than to inspire her students. This demo is not geared towards more- experienced artists. During this free demonstra- tion, Hillsbery will paint a fun loose watercolor showing the COURTESY PHOTO “Warm Summer Morning” by Carole Hillsbery various techniques and bright colors she uses. She will also discuss the basics of getting started: What materials to pur- chase and where, what water- color is all about, terminology, color washes, color mixing and more. This is an informal time for asking questions. Hillsbery has helped multi- ple students conquer their fear of making mistakes by paint- ing wet on wet, or wet on dry, with a lot of splattering and flinging of paint. This demo will provide a glimpse into the life of an artist and what you can do with your new-found excitement through this medi- um. Future beginner classes will be held in September on Thursdays, from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, con- tact Charlene Wilson at char Pioneer Museum hosts ‘Story Time’ The Siuslaw Pioneer Museum will once again host its popular Story Time on Friday, July 29, at 7 p.m., at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum, 278 Maple Street. The museum will welcome author Verla Shirley-Chaddick, a former North Fork Siuslaw resident. Shirley-Chaddick will discuss her recent book, “A Matter of Honor,” a tale of lost romance that blends the past and the present to tell the story of a World War II veteran’s search for his first love and his return to the European conti- nent to pay homage to the fall- en heroes of the liberation of Europe. The story is based upon the real-life travel notes of Shirley- Chaddick, who accompanied her 75-year-old uncle, George Esgate of Florence, to Belgium, Germany and France in 1999. The book traces their travels through the World War II cemeteries of Europe and his search for the Belgian girl he left behind in 1945. In 1945, while serving in Belgium, 20-year-old Private First Class George Esgate fell in love with Renee Durieux, an 18-year-old Belgian girl. When Esgate’s service in Belgium ended, he shipped home — but he vowed he would return to Belgium and keep his promise to marry Renee. It was a promise he could never keep. In 1999, Esgate, haunted by his broken pledge, wanted to find Renee and tell her that he was sincere in his affection for Social commentator Chris Chandler returns to Florence Poet, artist and social racon- teur Chris Chandler returns to Florence on Sunday, July 17, in a KXCR-sponsored presen- tation at the Siuslaw Public Library. This unique show will be more than storytelling and brilliant stream of conscious- ness recitations of original satire and humor. There’s music, too. Chandler will be accompa- nied by his acoustic guitar master sidekick, Paul Benoit, as he depicts scenes from his travels across the U.S. Son of a Baptist preacher, Chandler began performing as a street musician. He describes driving his car across the country to shows as “taking the pulse of America.” Part preacher, poet, vision- ary and wandering minstrel, Chandler can cast a spell over his audience unlike any other performer. A show business veteran, Chandler promises to be provacative, hilarious and give his audience an entertaining evening. The show will take place on at 7 p.m. in the library’s Bromley Room, 1460 Ninth St. Refreshments will be pro- vided. Chandler’s presentations are rapid-fire, poetic expressions which, below the surface, betray a deep respect for lan- guage, literature and democra- cy. There is no cover charge but donations will be accepted. For more information about Chris Chandler, visit www.chrischandler.org, or contact Stu Henderson at 541- 997-2997. A Matter of Honor is the story of his travels through Europe in 1999, accompanied by Shirley-Chaddick, to search for Renee. The fact that Esgate could not remember how to spell his love’s name or the name of the village in which she lived did not deter his mission. This program will appeal to romantics and historians alike. Story Time at the Museum is free and open to the public. DENTURE SERVICES INC.
