COM CHANTELLE MEYER/SIUSLAW NEWS Kaylee Graham and Ava Glowacki B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Siuslaw News Kaylee Graham and Ava Glowacki have taken on the roles of “power girls” as they promote the sixth year of the Power of Florence, held this Saturday at various locations around town. With the support of their families, community sponsors and the Florence City Council, the girls aim to make this year’s day of service projects the best one yet. Kaylee was just 11 when she started Power of “One” with the support of her civic-minded par- ents, Shannon and Tod Graham. “In 2011 I went before the city council to ask permission to invite the whole town to what I envi- sioned as a citywide day of giving back. I was about to show how much volunteering meant to me with that very successful first year,” she said. Now, the 16-year-old is driving and already preparing for college and a future where she might not be as involved. “I want this day to continue after I’m gone, that’s why I appointed Ava to carry on with me,” Kaylee said. “Ava is a bright, caring, good-hearted young lady.” Ava, 11, is the daughter of Gabe and Ella Glowacki. The girls have been friends since Ava was in kindergarten. Kaylee even babysat for the Glowackis. Ava said, “Kaylee basically told me I was helping last year. I just really want to help make a differ- ence in the community. And it’s really fun, too, and I get to hang out with Kaylee.” See B PHOTOS BY JACK DAVIS/SIUSLAW NEWS Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County Executive Director Chuck Trent makes good on a grades wager July 6 by having his head shaved by club members in exchange for them collectively receiving more than 40 A’s. The members blew past his challenge with 53 A’s and five straight-A grade cards, and more than half the grade cards have not yet been turned in. On July 6, Trent sat in the barber’s chair while club members took turns shaving off patches of his distinctive thick white curls. Under the close guidance of barber Susan Allison, members gave Trent an impressive Mohawk cut. After a flurry of photographs, club members resumed the task of converting Trent’s pate into a bowling ball. A T A GLANCE : Cleawox Lake, located within Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park three miles south of Florence on Highway 101, is perfect for swimming, kayaking and fishing. Surrounded by golden dunes, the 76.5-acre lake has restroom facilities, a bathhouse, a fishing dock and a large paved parking lot with a viewpoint overlooking the recreational area. The steep sand dunes are great places to practice sandboarding or play in the sand. Picnickers and groups can reserve the Cleawox Picnic Shelter and visitors can rent kayaks, canoes and paddleboats for use on the water. Opinion . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
