6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JULY 9, 2016 CROW kids to bust suds at car wash Children’s Repertory of Oregon Workshops (CROW) will hold its second annual fundraiser car wash as part of Power of Florence on July 16. The car wash will be in the parking lot of Oregon Pacific Bank, 1355 Highway 101, from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Funds raised at the car wash will be used for important building renovation costs for the nonprofit youth theatre organization. These costs include parking lot paving (city required), landscaping, and exterior paint and signage for the building. “Last year’s car wash raised more than $1,000 for the kids,” said CROW artistic director Melanie Heard. “We are hoping that the community will once again show its sup- port for our local kids in the arts by letting us shine up their wheels.” Heard said that not only will the CROW kids and volunteers do a great job washing cars, but may serenade visitors with Lions Club to provide free health screenings As part of Power of Florence, the Florence- Siuslaw Lions Club is offering free health screenings on Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Lights Cinemas. No appointment is necessary. Lions Club President Mike Groshong said, “Don’t miss this opportunity to check your health with these free screen- ings, including vision, glauco- ma, blood pressure and blood glucose (with three-hour fast).” The Oregon Lions Mobile Health Screenings Program offers quick, free health screenings. Individuals under 18 receive vision screening only. To participate in additional screenings, a parent or guardian must be present. The blood glucose screen- ing requires a three-hour fast. This presentation is part of the library’s fitness and out- door themed Adult Summer Reading Program. Besides, summer is the perfect time for an Oregon Coast hike. Soper grew up in Coos Bay and now splits her time between Manzanita and Portland. She has hiked the 400-mile Oregon Coast Trail (designated in 1975 by the Oregon State Parks Department) in segments twice. The book serves as a practi- cal trail guide, describing how to navigate 40 consecutive day hikes starting at Fort Stevens State Park and ending in California. Those walking the trail will experience the majesty of Oregon’s beaches in personal and immediate ways, and are certain to better appreciate the open access to its shores, a privilege not possible in most other coastal states. Descriptions of most of the day hikes are accompanied with mile-by-mile maps, and provide useful tips such as knowing which hikes are tide dependent, and how to arrange for boat rides. Enhancing the hiking expe- rience, the guidebook also includes many historic and present day photographs, as well as features stories about interesting and little known places hikers will pass through along the way. Who was Matt Kramer? Which lighthouse became a columbarium? How did The Hollering Place get its name? “Exploring the Oregon Coast Trail” weaves together a unique hiking experience with a better understanding of the history, personalities and places that make the Oregon Coast so special. Soper will talk about some of these special places and her experiences in hiking the spec- tacular Oregon shoreline at this library summer reading pro- gram. The program is open to the public and will appeal to adult hikers and historians and all who have or want to explore the Oregon Coast by foot. Soper’s “Exploring the Oregon Coast Trail” is an extensive 298-page guide to Oregon’s 400-mile coastline and is available for purchase at Books ’N’ Bears on Bay Street in Florence, and online at: www.dragonfly-press-pdx. com.
