SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JULY 9, 2016 OBITUARIES PHELPS—Betty Louise Van Riper Phelps, of Florence, beloved wife of Delbert P h e l p s , passed away June 16, 2016, in her home with her husband, Del, at her Betty Phelps side. Betty was born in Tillamook, Ore., and spent her early years there. She then lived in the greater Portland area until 1991, when she moved with her sister and husband to Florentine Estates. Her careers included model- ing, pay master for Pierce Freight Lines, owner of Betty’s Little Acre, a nursery in N.E. Portland, and lastly owner of Ace Fence. After moving to Florence, she volunteered at the gift shop at Peace Harbor Medical Center and drove the LaPaLoma. Betty loved flowers and gar- dening. She could look at any plant and tell you its name. She loved traveling and was escorted through most of the western states by her husband, Del, after they were married on Nov. 15, 1998. Betty is survived by her loving husband, Delbert Phelps; her sis- ter, Nita Koford of Eugene; her sister, June Hooker, and husband Norm, of Waldport; her sons: Bruce Temple and his wife Sue, of Long Beach, Wash., David Van Riper of Portland, Gerry Van Riper, who preceded Betty in death, and the mother of his chil- dren, Colette Moore, and their grandchildren; and Jim Van Riper and his wife Sam, of Eagle Creek; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins. Betty is also survived by her husband Del’s children: Clifford Phelps and his wife Debbi, Cathy Dietz and husband Frank, Lisa Thomas, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty will be greatly missed for her love of life and her fight for it, and her love for all those around her. She was interred at Pacific Sunset Cemetery on the hill over- looking the Siuslaw River Bridge and the dunes. There will be a celebration of life gathering for love and remembrance of Betty on Sunday, July 24, at the Florentine Estates Club House’s Florentine Room, from 2 to 4 p.m., for fam- ily and friends. At her request, donations in her memory can be made to the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum. These can be left at the celebration or with Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home. ELY—Dean Edward Ely, 82, of Florence, passed away peace- fully, July 5, 2016, in the company of his loving family. Dean was born April 9, 1934, in Montpelier, Ind., to Mary Dean Ely and Leslie Ely, where he grew up on the family farm. Despite his worldly travels in the service and his success in business later in life, his appetite at the dinner table would always reveal his good ol’ farmboy her- itage. He had two brothers, Donn and Dick; and in 1954 began dat- ing the next “D” of the family, Deloris Kleinknight of Bluffton, Ind. The two later married on June 5, 1955. Dean attended Purdue University and then joined the U.S. Air Force in October 1955. He served for four years, with 18 months of that time spent over- seas in Japan. After his active duty, he then served an additional two years in the reserves, receiv- ing an honorable discharge with the title of Airman First Class. In 1957, Dean and Deloris introduced the first of two more “Ds” to the Ely family when their daughter Diana was born. Their son, Doug, followed her in 1960. The Ely family moved from Indiana to Texas, back to Indiana, then to New Jersey and California, then back to Texas before moving back out west to California and finally settling in Oregon — probably the whole way with Dean trying to cop a feel of Mrs. Ely and being scold- ed with “Dean, quit!” In 1984, Dean’s first and only grandchild was born; breaking the mold of the family of “Ds,” Diana named her daughter Amber. It was love at first sight for Dean, and following the phrase “Grandpa, I need dresses,” Dean produced a new dress from every business trip from then on out. It was Dean’s jobs that moved them around the country: COURTS Franklin Electric, South Bend Lathe, Philco Ford, Fritz Co., his own company, Worldwide Transportation Consultants, and finally The Park Motel in Florence. The Elys always made them- selves a part of the locality through community and church involvement. By doing so, Dean enjoyed many deep relationships that turned into life-long friends. Dean was passionate about sharing his love for God with anyone he met, and was never shy about giving glory to God for the many blessings in his life. “But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confi- dence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8) Dean was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donn. He is survived by his wife Deloris; his brother Dick; his daughter Diana; his son Doug; and his granddaughter Amber. For all of those that knew him and loved him, it was we who were blessed. Services will be held Wednesday, July 13, at 3 p.m., at Florence Christian Church, 990 Second Street in Florence. Donations in Dean’s name can be made to Florence Christian Church Prime Timers Scholarship Fund or Hospice of Florence. PETRONI—Alfred “Al” Petroni, 72, of Florence, passed away July 2, 2016. At his request, private crema- tional rites were held through Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home. Florence Municipal Court July 5 Nikki Ray Nagrone plead- ed guilty of reckless driving and DUII. She was sentenced to eight days in Florence City Jail and must report to treat- ment. She must pay $2,180 in fines and her driver’s license is suspended for one year. Melvin Panter pleaded guilty to theft. He must pay $450 in fines and not contact or be in or about the premis- es or place of employment of the victim.
