2 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, JUNE 25, 2016 OBITUARIES CHAPMAN —George Robert Chapman Jr., lifelong resident of Florence, p a s s e d away April 7, 2016, at the age of 90. He was born May 8, 1925, in George Robert Florence at Chapman Jr. his aunt Gertrude Bernhardt’s home. His father, George Robert Chapman, and mother, Martha Laura Houghton Chapman, lived on 109 acres that his grandfather Robert Moody Chapman bought from Frank Condon in 1903. His grandfather, father and family had a herd of milking cows and Angus beef cattle for all these many years. Robert’s father George passed away in 1951. Robert met his wife Ruby on April 23, the day after her 17th birthday, and were mar- ried June 27, 1952. Milking cows, raising four boys, hunting and fishing were his life. When the North Fork (Minerva) school closed, he started high school in Florence at the age of 13. Playing football was his pleasure. He had five years of earning a “letter” on the Siuslaw team by going an extra senior year. Just before one game with Reedsport, the Reedsport team came in to see the play- er with the size 15 shoes. He received a full scholar- ship to Pacific University, but was unable to take it because of World War II. Robert was a sawyer in many small mills throughout the area. When Robert was 83, he won a gold medal at the U.S. Arm Wrestling Championships. Robert is survived by his wife Ruby and sons Robert, Jesse, Dwight and John. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church, 25th Street, Florence, June 27, 2016, at 1 p.m. This date is Robert and Ruby’s 64th wedding anniversary. EARLE—Ruby Lexene Earle, 82, passed away June 19, 2016. She was born Nov. 7, 1934, in Virginia. Ruby married Elmer Loren Earle in Florence in the ’50s. They had one child. Elmer passed away in 1977 of Parkinson’s disease. She remarried Melvin Paul Earle in Florence, who preceded her in death. She is survived by two sis- ters, Mea Shoak and Verna Owens, her son Daniel (Linda) Earle, and one grand- daughter, Bonnie Earle. Ruby will be cremated, and no services are planned. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ANDERSON —Dr. Richard Anderson, 81, of Florence passed away June 15, 2016. A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at the Florence LDS church, 2705 Munsel Lake Road, with interment at Pacific Sunset Cemetery. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. EDLUND—Ellen E. Edlund, 97, of Florence, for- merly of Coos Bay, passed away June 21, 2016, in Florence. Arrangements are under the care of Coos Bay Chapel, 541-267-3131. Local students make honor roll at Oregon State CORVALLIS — Names of students who have made the Scholastic Honor Roll Spring term have been announced by Oregon State University. A total of 1,017 students earned straight-As (4.0). Another 3,745 earned a B-plus (3.5) or better to make the list- ing. According to police, the caller says his name is either Deputy or Sergeant Walker with the sheriff’s office. He claims that a person has missed jury duty and needs to pay a fine. Then he either offers to collect the fine onsite or has the person go to the police department to pay. Residents are warned that this is a scam and the man is not affiliated with either the Florence Police Department or Area BIRTHS WILBY—Jaikeb Alan Wilby, a boy weighing 8 lbs., 15 ozs., was born to Jaime Wilby and Alan Wilby Jr. of Florence on June 20, 2016, at 6:05 p.m. at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center. ATKINSON—Seaton Lee Atkinson, a boy weighing 8 lbs., 5 ozs., was born to Elizabeth and Steven Atkinson of Florence on June 21, 2016, at 7:42 p.m. at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center.
