Operations and maintenance of the newly refurbished nine-site campground, located east of Mapleton, was recently transferred from the U.S. Forest Service to Lane County Parks. The Save Archie citizens group was instrumental in creating public awareness for the reopening of the park. Commissioner Bozievich said, “This reopen- ing is a testament to the local folks that wouldn’t let it die. It is about grass roots activism from the local community and a whole bunch of collaboration. That’s why we are here reopening this park today.” Military Museum looks to rewrite future Executive director leads new strategy, opens survey B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Siuslaw News Although it focuses on the past and historical artifacts, Oregon Coast Military Museum is creating a new strategic plan to launch into the future. “We’re coming up on our one-year anniversary on July 4,” Executive Director Cal Applebee said. “The board is convinced that it’s time to do a new strategic plan that says where we want to go from here and what we want to do. We have to create a game plan for what we want to display in the future.” The first step of that was hir- ing Applebee as the part-time director on May 1. TODAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY 65 55 62 49 65 49 69 53 WEATHER Full Forecast, A3 With the real estate market heating up, Port of Siuslaw commissioners focused on the potential sale of two port prop- erties during their June 15 meeting. According to Port Manager Steven Leskin, the old port office building, located at 1499 Bay St., and the 40-acre Pacific View Business Park off Kingwood Street, near the Florence Municipal Airport, have prospective buyers. “We have a prospective pur- chaser who has expressed an interest in the Pacific View property.” Leskin said. “He has been doing his due diligence for some time. I think he is a seri- ous buyer.” Leskin reported that he has hired commercial property real- tor John Brown from Eugene to represent the Pacific View property. “The reason I selected him,” Leskin said, “is because they specialize in commercial real estate and they have a lot of presence along the coast and a lot of listings in the Florence area. I am also expecting an appraisal back in a week or so, so that we can set a price with Mr. Brown.” The Pacific View parcel is currently zoned light industrial and deemed “shovel ready” by the State of Oregon. The Bay Street property is currently occupied by Silver Sand Dollar art gallery and jew- elry store, which signed a sec- ond three-year lease in May. Also during the meeting, Port of Siuslaw commissioners voted to approve the 2016-17 operating budget of $1,463,000.
