Grable cut the ribbon June 17 to officially reopen Archie Knowles Campground. Operations and maintenance of the newly refurbished
nine-site campground, located east of Mapleton, was recently transferred from the U.S. Forest Service to Lane County Parks. The Save
Archie citizens group was instrumental in creating public awareness for the reopening of the park. Commissioner Bozievich said, “This reopen-
ing is a testament to the local folks that wouldn’t let it die. It is about grass roots activism from the local community and a whole bunch of
collaboration. That’s why we are here reopening this park today.”

Although it focuses on the
past and historical artifacts,
Oregon Coast Military Museum
is creating a new strategic plan to
launch into the future.
“We’re coming up on our
one-year anniversary on July
4,” Executive Director Cal
Applebee said. “The board is
convinced that it’s time to do a
new strategic plan that says
where we want to go from here
and what we want to do. We
have to create a game plan for
what we want to display in the
future.”
The first step of that was hir-
ing Applebee as the part-time
director on May 1.

With the real estate market
heating up, Port of Siuslaw
commissioners focused on the
potential sale of two port prop-
erties during their June 15
meeting.
According to Port Manager
Steven Leskin, the old port
office building, located at 1499
Bay St., and the 40-acre Pacific
View Business Park off
Kingwood Street, near the
Florence Municipal Airport,
have prospective buyers.
“We have a prospective pur-
chaser who has expressed an
interest in the Pacific View
property.” Leskin said. “He has
been doing his due diligence for
some time. I think he is a seri-
ous buyer.”
Leskin reported that he has
hired commercial property real-
tor John Brown from Eugene to
represent the Pacific View
property.
“The reason I selected him,”
Leskin said, “is because they
specialize in commercial real
estate and they have a lot of
presence along the coast and a
lot of listings in the Florence
area. I am also expecting an
appraisal back in a week or so,
so that we can set a price with
Mr. Brown.”
The Pacific View parcel is
currently zoned light industrial
and deemed “shovel ready” by
the State of Oregon.
The Bay Street property is
currently occupied by Silver
Sand Dollar art gallery and jew-
elry store, which signed a sec-
ond three-year lease in May.
Also during the meeting, Port
of Siuslaw commissioners
voted to approve the 2016-17
operating budget of $1,463,000.
During the May meeting,
commissioners directed Leskin
to evaluate the feasibility of the
port acquiring a commercial
