Siuslaw High School graduated 82 Friday evening, June 10, and Mapleton High School graduated nine on Saturday, June 11. Siuslaw School Board members handed out diplomas to this year’s 75 graduating seniors, six 2015 graduating seniors and one foreign exchange student. In addition, 35 local organizations award- ed 91 scholarships totaling $121,850 to 25 of the high school seniors. Six underclass students and one home-school student also received scholarships during the awards ceremony May 26. See GRADUATION 6A PHOTOS BY RYAN CRONK/SIUSLAW NEWS M ore than 750 people attended the seventh annual Florence Green Fair on Saturday, presented by Siuslaw News and KCST Coast Radio. This year’s event featured 30 exhibitors and several speakers who presented local products, environ- mentally friendly prac- tices and healthy living at the Florence Events Center. People entered the fair with donations to Florence Food Share, raising an estimated 400 pounds of food. A new addition that proved popular this year was Oregon Coast Humane Society’s Give or Take area, where people could bring items and swap them for others. The 2016 Green Fair was sponsored by Laurel Bay Gardens and County Transfer and Recycling. County budget focuses on closing revenue gap B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Siuslaw News Lane County Budget Committee, composed of five community members and the five Lane County commissioners, has approved the fiscal year 2016-17 budget. The commissioners will meet June 21 for its final adoption. County Administrator Steve Mokrohisky spoke about the county budget when he was in Florence last month. “We want to create long-term financial stability and stability in services we provide to the communi- ty. Our budget is really aimed at that,” he said. “It’s also aimed at recognizing that while we have scarce resources, we can still do some good things and pos- itive investments in services in the community.” The approved budget includes reducing the $6 million structural imbalance in the general fund See INSIDE Up from the ashes Ambulance . . . . . . . . . . . . . Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal Sean Barrett called it a “four-alarm fire” and the biggest commercial fire the City of Florence had seen in recent years. Now, a year later, recovery of the 36-unit building is complete. “The insurance decreed that we would have all the roof, doors, mechanisms and electric replaced. Other than the con- crete shell, it’s pretty much all new as a Now result,” Brian said. The June 16, 2015, fire started in one unit, and quickly spread to three more. From there, other units and their contents caught fire and billowed smoke. An esti- mated $5 million in damages was report- ed at the time, though the Stents believe the total is much less.
