SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 2016 Stay out later at First Friday OBITUARIES PETERSON —Charles “Pete” Peterson died from a heart attack on Sunday, May 29, 2016, four days after back surgery at Sacred H e a r t Medical Center at Charles Riverbend. Peterson Pete was born in Grass Valley, Calif., on Jan. 16, 1947, to Ruth Lucille and Charles Henry Peterson. During his life, Pete lived in a variety of locations throughout California, until his retirement from law enforcement in 2002, at which time he and his wife, Deborah, moved to Florence. Pete served in the U.S. Army, had a lengthy love affair with scuba diving, was a member of the Florence Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society, and was a passionate golfer, hav- ing been a member of the men’s clubs at both Sandpines and Ocean Dunes golf cours- es. Pete is survived by his wife, Deborah; his daughter, Joshlend Rae Peterson; two granddaughters, Victoria Ross and Jessica Peterson; his sis- ter, Anna Dunham; brother Dale Hale; and many extend- ed family members. He will be greatly missed by them all. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw (PCOS). There will be a memorial service for Pete on Friday, June 3, at 1 p.m., at PCOS, 3996 Highway 101. A reception will follow in the church’s Fellowship Hall. The family requests that donations be made to the National Diabetes Society in his name. HANKS—F. Clara Hanks, 84, of Florence, passed away May 25, 2016. A memorial celebration of her life will be h e l d S a t u r d a y, June 4, at 2 Clara Hanks p.m., at the Florence Adventist Church. Private interment was held at Pacific Sunset Cemetery with Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home in charge of arrange- ments. BROWN —Gertrude “Bobbie” Brown, 95, of Florence, passed away May 22, 2016, at Elderberry Square. S h e maintained her inde- pendence at home until a week before falling ill, Gertrude as per her Brown strong wish- es. Bobbie was born April 6, 1921, in Long Beach, Calif. After completing high school, she was a riveter at Consolidated-Vultee Aircraft during World War II. Her 1942 marriage to Bob Brown was delayed due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, where he was on the USS Honolulu on its way home. Bob passed away Jan. 11, 2012; they had been married 71 years. After the birth of her chil- dren, Gary and Linda, the fam- ily moved to New York, Ore., then on to San Diego, Calif., Subic Bay in the Philippines and back to San Diego. Then after the kids left home, they moved to Keflavic, Iceland, where Bob retired. They then moved to Keizer, Ore., Bandon, Ore., and even- tually Florence, where they enjoyed retirement. Bobbie enjoyed her home and Monday trips to the casino buffet. She cherished her local friends and family, especially Vern and Dee Oremus; with- out their collective help, she could not have maintained her independence. Bobbie is survived by her son, Gary, and his wife, Susie; her granddaughter, Teona Marston-Brown, and her hus- band, Christopher, along with their son, Tanner, all of Marlborough, Mass.; and her grandson, Joey Fox, of San Diego, Calif. In addition to her husband Bob, Bobbie was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Fox, mother of Joey. Bobbie’s greatest asset was her stubborn independence. Her greatest joys were her friends and family. She will be missed by them far more than she could ever imagine. She will be privately interred with Bob at the National Cemetery at Roseburg. This service will be private, at her request. 60th ANNIVERSARY HATCH—Donald F. (Joey) Hatch, of Florence, passed away May 8, 2016. Joey was born Dec. 6, 1938, in the Florence area. His par- ents were Ronald Hatch and Elinor Boling. He worked his entire life as a cafeteria supervisor. Joey was a kind man with a sense of humor. He was a fine pianist and music was his life’s passion. He played for many programs and people and loved to help the elementary school children with their music pro- grams. Antiques was his favorite past-time with many hours of browsing and buying. Preceding him in death was his father, Ronald Hatch; and his mother, Elinor Boling Heisler. Survivors include his sister, Priscilla Hafner; his brother, Theodore Hatch; step-sister, Connie Smith; step-brothers: Bill, Robert and Jack Heisler; plus a long list of friends and relatives. Donations can be made in his name to the S.D.A. Sonshine Christian School, 4445 Highway 101, in Florence. A memorial service will be held on June 5, at 11 a.m., at S.D.A.
