At noon on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, hear about Civil War and Oregon history. David Burkett of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Tami Dreiling, will provide pioneer reenactments and storytelling, and Ken Sawyer will bring his Civil War and Native American Licensed Bonded Insured memorabilia. Bring a chair and some friends and enjoy Civil War History near the river in a park-like setting. Bathrooms will be available to the public. There will also be free hot dogs, chili, cookies and bottled water. Potluck items for salads or desserts are welcome. Box 31,000 • Florence, OR 97439 Library to host two DanceAbility events this week The Siuslaw Public Library will welcome the DanceAbility International, a group based in Eugene, Ore., that is dedicated to bringing together abled and disabled people of all ages to share in the creative art of dance. The library will host two free special events this month. The first event is Thursday, May 26, from 2 to 3 p.m. During this one-hour presenta- tion, the group’s co-founder, award-winning choreographer and dancer Alito Alessi, will talk about DanceAbility International and share a video about the organization’s pow- erful vision. Then, on Saturday, May 28, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Alessi will conduct a DanceAbility creative move- ment workshop open to all. Both events will take place in the Bromley Room located in the library. Alessi, artistic director and co-founder of DanceAbility International, has been involved in mixed-abilities dance since the late 1980s. Third St., at the corner of Pontiac St., in Yachats. The pie will be served from 11 a.m. until it is gone; come early for best selection. There is nothing like the taste of homemade pie. The wide selection of pies made by Yachats Ladies Club members include many varieties of apple, berry, peach and cherry. There will be other fruit pies and many cream pies from which to choose. Slices are a generous sixth of a pie and are $4 each. Large brownies are $3. Add ice cream for just $1 more. Coffee and tea are $1. To-go boxes are available so take some home for later. This is a great time to meet some of the visitors to the community as well as connect with friends and neighbors who turn out for this annual event. The Yachats Ladies Club hosts three pie socials per summer season. The next Pie and Ice Cream Social will be July 4. In addition, the handmade Scholarship Quilt will be on display and raffle tickets will be for sale. The famous Gifts-on-the- Go baskets will be available for sale as well. The Yachats Ladies Club is an active service club for women of the South County who enjoy creating events that raise funds for community nonprofit groups.
