Applebee was named execu- tive director of the Oregon Coast Military Museum effec- tive May 1, “This is precisely why we wanted to bring Cal on as our executive director,” said Museum Board president Wayne Sharpe. “He is well known in the tourism industry and will bring focus and expo- COURTESY PHOTO From left: Andy Vobora, Glenda Polling and Cal Applebee sure to our museum. He has already hit the streets with our new rack cards at various loca- tions within the county and the coast and has begun a new strategic planning process for where we want to go in the future.” Applebee said, “There are a lot of things we need to accom- plish as we approach our first anniversary. Folks can watch our website for ways to partici- pate in our strategic planning as we value their input. “And we’re always looking for volunteers to man the museum as well,” Applebee added. Working toward ‘A Greener Florence’ City awards Lofy Construction, Florence Food Share, others with annual award B Y C HANTELLE M EYER Siuslaw News Florence City Council and the Environmental Man- agement Advisory Committee (EMAC) selected four appli- cants for this year’s Greener Florence certificates. Of the four, Lofy Construction and Florence Food Share will each receive an inscription on the Greener Florence plaques. From Baby to Graduate (it seemed like just a few short years) 8th Grade, High School or College ~ Grad’s Name ~ School Birth Date: Parents: Grandparents: Coming Saturday, June 4th Planning Director Wendy Farley-Campbell presented EMAC’s recommendation for the awards at the city council meeting May 16. Mayor Joe Henry handed out the awards. “This is the sixth year of the Greener Florence Award Program, which likes to rec- ognize business and commu- nity service organizations for their efforts in making Florence a greener communi- ty,” Farley-Campbell said. City Councilor Susy Lacer said, “Great job everyone!” EMAC created “A Greener Florence” in April 2010 to learn about and recognize the efforts taken by Florence-area businesses and organizations to reduce their impact on the environment. The Greener Florence Awards apply to both busi- nesses and organizations that reduce the amount of waste going into the waste stream; reuse or contribute to the reuse of materials; recycle materials; compost waste material; performs community education; and contribute to the environment in other ways. Florence received one busi- ness nomination, Lofy Construction, and three com- munity organization nomina- tions: Florence Food Share, Florence Area Humane Society Thrift Store and the Siuslaw Genealogical Society. All the nominees were awarded Greener Florence certificates. “A perpetual plaque recog- nizes the best overall applica- tions,” said the city council’s packet. Lofy Construction’s name will go on the Greener Florence Business Award and Florence Food Share will receive an inscription on the Greener Florence Community Service Award. Both plaques will be on dis- play at Florence City Hall, 250 Highway 101. “The business reduces impact on the stormwater sys- tem by sweeping driveways,” Farley-Campbell said of Lofy Construction. “They are also committed to not using any chemicals in their cleaning processes and pressure wash- ing.” Darryl Detar, who applied for Lofy Construction, said, “On all remodels we remove items that can be reused and bring them to places such as Habitat for Humanity or the humane society for resale.” The company also reuses lumber whenever possible, recycles cardboard and con- crete debris and sends vegeta- tion debris to Sand Ranch for composting. Florence Food Share com- posts food, recycles many materials and has switched to more sustainable systems. “They have composted over 100 pounds of food waste per month, which is quite a bit, and do water conservation through a system of drip irri- gation and a water catchment system for rainwater,” Farley- Campbell said. Florence Food Share has also created partnerships with Fred Meyer, Safeway and Grocery Outlet to create the Fresh Alliance Program to uti- lize products at or past the “sell by” or “best by” date, a process that allows consum- able goods to be distributed and not go to waste. The Siuslaw Genealogical Society has a recycle program that collects small electronic equipment at various loca- tions and events around town. These items are sent to sus- tainable resource nonprofits. The Oregon Coast Humane Society, formerly Florence Area Humane Society, Thrift Store recycles containers and keeps donated items out of the landfill.
