Sheriffs conduct extra Rhody Days patrols Lane County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) will be con- ducting saturation patrols on Highways 126 throughout the Rhododendron Festival this weekend. According to Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), Highway 126 remains one of the deadliest highways in the State of Oregon. Through grant funding, LCSO will be conducting saturation patrols in the Florence area and Highway 126 area this weekend during the Rhododendron Days Festival. Deputies will be focusing on speeding vehicles, seat belt compliance and DUII detec- tion and apprehension. The sheriff’s office is anticipating heavy traffic and congestion on both Highways 101 and 126 as a result of the annual festival, which is expected to bring in more than 20,000 people. Motorists are advised to expect delays in the area and encouraged to drive safely, drive sober and always wear a seat belt. The Florence Police Department, area sheriff’s offices and Oregon State Police are also conducting a Seat Belt Blitz — to ensure proper use of safety belt fea- tures — through Sunday, May 29. LCSO received $20,000 in combined grant funding for three types of traffic enforce- ment focus. This funding makes possi- ble the sheriff’s office partic- ipation in state and national campaigns to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities on Lane County roads. Grants are administered through Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Oregon State Sheriff’s Association, allowing sheriff’s deputies to conduct saturation patrols on over- time. These patrols have a spe- cial emphasis on seat belt violations, speed related inci- dents and DUII detection and enforcement.
