Rhody Car Show, Shine to host new hours This year marks the 24th year for the Rhody Car Show and Shine, held annually dur- ing Rhododendron Festival weekend. This car show is Florence’s original car show. This year there are a few changes in the show’s hours, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but the loca- tion remains the same, along Highway 101 in the Grocery Outlet and City Lights Cinemas parking lot. More than 200 classic cars will be on display for enthusi- asts to admire. Cars come from all over Oregon, Idaho and Washington. The local British Car Club has quite a few for- eign automobiles attending, as Breaking news, photo galleries and MORE! Visit the Siuslaw News online at WWW.THESIUSLAWNEWS.COM From Baby to Graduate does the Rhody Car Cruisers. This event is put on by a small local car club called the Beachkombers Car Club. “Again this year, we hope to have impressive military units,” said Jeannette Scalera, one of the main members who has been putting this show on for more than 20 years. “These mil- itary guys enjoy a friendly com- petition within their ranks and it’s fun to see who brings out the big guns — so to speak.” This central location has been the favorite place to host this show. “We want to thank the busi- nesses who donate this space at the expense of their Saturday business,” Scalera said. Grocery Outlet has been a big sponsor in the past and pro- vides vender booths to different charities and organizations. City Lights Cinemas has adjusted its programming that day to accommodate everyone. It will have the lobby open to foot traffic so anyone who has- n’t looked inside can see what’s playing and enjoy not only movies, but independent films and more. In addition, located in the same shopping center is the Habitat for Humanity Surplus Store, where you can find many items for home improve- ment projects while supporting Habitat for Humanity in Florence. The Rhody Show and Shine is Saturday, May 21. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the show starts at 10 a.m. This year, the trophy awards will begin earlier than usual, from at 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. This is a judged event, with five judges. Plus, the Rhody Pageant court chooses its favorite. The event is open to cars and trucks 1975 and older. There is space for 250 vehicles. DJ Jack will be back spin- ning old time 50s favorites over the loud speaker. He also keeps everyone up to date with the raffle drawings, the biscuits and gravy supply and more. Raffle drawings include auto and garden supplies, as well as gift certificates from Three Rivers Casino for a two-night stay and 18 holes of golf. Also, Driftwood Shores has provided a one-night stay in an ocean- front room, Digital Dunes is offering an original work of photo art, and the list of raffle prizes goes on The evening includes a car cruise beginning at 7 p.m. Space is limited, so sign up your vehicle early at the Siuslaw Valley Firefighters Association booth during the car show. Friday afternoon, May 20, there will be a pre-registration and a mini car show at the Grocery Outlet Parking lot from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. This pre-registration makes for fewer lines at the registra- tion booth in the morning and streamlines the entire process.
