SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2016 9 A Teacher Staff Appreciation Week M AY 2-6, 2016 Dedicated to all teachers and school staff as thanks for their time, dedication and talents that they generously share every day with our children. You make a difference. n 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt estab- lished National Teacher Day. Since 1984, National PTA has expanded on Roosevelt’s idea and has designated the first week in May as a special time to honor the men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating our chil- dren. Teachers and school staff play a key role in student success and sometimes a simple “thanks” goes a long way making them feel valued. “Experts have concluded that giving teachers and educational assistants the status and recognition they deserve as professionals is one of the best ways to help improve education in this country,” said Diane McCalmont, Florence PTA president. “We all know exceptional peo- ple that work with students in our com- munity, and we should recognize that there is a great deal of work being done in our schools.” Florence Community PTA says thank you to the teachers and staff of the Siuslaw School District for their commit- ment to educating the children of our community. It acknowledges the crucial role they play in making sure every stu- dent receives a quality education. Beginning Monday, May 2, the teachers and staff at all Siuslaw School District schools and the busing/ maintenance department, will receive a variety of special surprises, organized by the PTA. Many thanks to Tiffany Holdahl, Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week coordi- nator, for putting together the week-long activities. Everything from breakfast one day and lunch on another, to fun toys and candy for a “Hump Day Hoopla,” to sweets pro- vided by the local unit of Moms in Touch, to mounds of fresh oranges and free cheeseburger coupons for McDonald’s. Many local businesses have also shown their support for our schools by providing food, raffle prizes, free coupons and discounts. “The response and support that we’ve received from local businesses is amaz- ing,” said McCalmont. “They recognize the effort and dedication that Siuslaw staff put in to educating children in our community, and want to reward that work.” PTA will raffle off gifts every day at each of the schools and the bus barn, with a district-wide grand prize raffle on Friday. One lucky school employee will receive a beautiful fire pit donated by True Value. The following community businesses donated items for this week’s celebration of school employees: BiMart, Bridgewater Restaurant, RestoBar, Mo’s Restaurant, Homegrown Pub and Grill, Oregon LunchBox, City Lights Cinemas, True Value, BJ’s Ice Cream, Safeway, Wind Drift Gallery, McDonald’s and Florence Dry Cleaning.
