Florence Events Center Medeiros jewelry returns to Backstreet Gallery offers exhibit opportunities for local artists FLORENCE — Florence Events Center (FEC) will have several opportu- nities for artists to display their talents in Gallerie One and Five during the fall and winter of 2016 and continuing in 2017. The FEC Gallery Committee, as part of Friends of the FEC, is giving artists advance notice of upcoming exhibits, as well as offering new and creative chal- lenges to artists. The first special exhibit will take place in October and November. This will be the second annual Artistic Visions Award Show. Artists can display up to three pieces of artwork, including 2-D, photog- raphy and 3-D. Cash awards will be given to winners in each category, as well as honorable mention ribbons. Qualified jurors from outside the Florence area will judge this show. In December, 2016, the FEC will offer a new exhibit encouraging people to “Give Art this Christmas.” Artists will be asked to submit works that are $100 or less, and a fun reception will be planned with live music, refreshments and photos with Santa. January and February of 2017 will be third annual “For the Love of Animals” exhibit, with a reception held to benefit the Florence Area Humane Society. Pet photos are always a fun part of this event. March and April will be a patriotic themed exhibit, with a reception benefit- ing DAV and the Military Heritage Museum. Florence and the surrounding regions have many talented artists who are encourage to share their works at the FEC. Publicity and details on each of the upcoming exhibits will be available the month prior, and applications will also be available at that time online at www.eventcenter.org. Siuslaw Public Library to host ‘Hang It All 2’ during May FLORENCE — The Siuslaw Public Library will again present “Hang It All 2” exhibit now through May 30. This year’s theme is “Animals.” Artwork will be on display throughout the month of May in the lobby gallery and lobby display case. This show is in addi- tion to the library’s annual “Hang It All” in November. All artists and craftspeople were invit- ed to enter this non-juried art show. For more information, call the library at 541-997-3132. Coos Art Museum has been a cultural focal point of Oregon’s scenic southern coast since 1966. It occupies the historic 1936 Art Deco U.S. Federal Building in downtown Coos Bay. The museum offers a wide range of arts activities including exhibitions, art classes and lectures. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Museum admission: $5 general, $2 students, veterans and seniors; free to museum members. C ENTRAL • A r ts & En t er ta in m e nt • M AY 2 0 1 6 FLORENCE — Backstreet Gallery welcomes Shelly Medeiros, jewelry designer, as its newest member. Her work now appears at the gallery. Medeiros is self-taught in the ancient technique of wire wrapping by which she creates her special brand of handmade jewelry. Leather plays a significant part in many of her pieces. Using semi-precious stones, crystals and leather, Medeiros weaves curvilinear designs into beautiful wearable art. Her talents as an artisan developed sub- sequent to her retirement from a career in the accounting world. After vacationing in Florence, she and her husband moved here to take advan- tage and inspiration from the beautiful surroundings. Along with the work of 20 some artists, visitors can find Medeiros’ work at Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St., which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 8 p.m. on Friday evenings.
