Many elderly people suffer from depression, and dementia is common. However, there is help. May is also National Mental Health Awareness Month. Also at the meeting, the FACC will present a $500 col- lege scholarship to a local high school senior who has been selected especially for involve- ment in community service and volunteer work. The mission of the FACC is to improve the quality of life in Western Lane County through partnership, networking, vol- unteerism, community involve- ment, education and aware- ness. This year’s scholarship recipient manifests this mis- sion. Each month, FACC selects a local service project or agency to support. This month’s fea- tured project is the Siuslaw Elementary School garden. Anyone who would like to donate hand tools, gloves, pot- ting soil, seeds or seedlings, or make a cash donation can bring them to the meeting to be deliv- ered to the school garden proj- ect. Also at the May 4 meeting, the board will be accepting nominations for board mem- bers for the coming year in preparation for its annual elec- tion at the June 1 meeting. Anyone interested in serving on the board of directors for FACC should attend. The board meets monthly to direct the affairs of FACC.
