Music teacher to host final Florence recital
Music teacher Jessica Treon
of Seal Rock will host her stu-
dents for her final recital at the
Community Baptist Church in
Florence this Sunday, May 1,
at 5 p.m.
“I would like to invite any
and all of my former students
and their families to join us,”
said Treon. “The recital pro-
gram will be short and as
always will be followed by
refreshments with each family
contributing a plate of cookies
or other finger foods.
“It would be wonderful to
see some families from my
past 20 years of teaching in
Florence.”
In 1996, Treon moved with
her husband to the Oregon
Coast. They settled in Yachats
as they were both to be self-
employed and wanted to be
located between Florence and
Newport until they saw which
way their businesses would
grow. Shortly after moving
here, word traveled to
Florence that a piano teacher
with 20 years of experience
was hoping to become estab-

independent people, but they
shouldn’t have to build com-

and conditions that accompany
the aging process, and when to
get professional help.
Many elderly people suffer
from depression, and dementia
is common. However, there is
help. If you have a friend or
family member with any of
these conditions or behaviors,
this will be an opportunity to
garner resources to offer sup-
port.
May is also National Mental
Health Awareness Month.
Also at the meeting, the
FACC will present a $500 col-
lege scholarship to a local high
school senior who has been
selected especially for involve-
ment in community service and
volunteer work.
The mission of the FACC is
to improve the quality of life in
Western Lane County through
partnership, networking, vol-
unteerism, community involve-
ment, education and aware-
ness. This year’s scholarship
recipient manifests this mis-
sion.
Each month, FACC selects a
local service project or agency
to support. This month’s fea-
tured project is the Siuslaw
Elementary School garden.
Anyone who would like to
donate hand tools, gloves, pot-
ting soil, seeds or seedlings, or
make a cash donation can bring
them to the meeting to be deliv-
ered to the school garden proj-
ect.
Also at the May 4 meeting,
the board will be accepting
nominations for board mem-
bers for the coming year in
preparation for its annual elec-
tion at the June 1 meeting.
Anyone interested in serving
on the board of directors for
FACC should attend.
The board meets monthly to
direct the affairs of FACC.

Commerce, will host a semi-
nar on how to find and maxi-
mize mentors on Tuesday,
May 3, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at
the Florence Events Center,
715 Quince St.
Light food and beverage
will be served.
Led by RAIN Venture
Catalyst and serial entrepre-
neur Caroline Cummings,
“Mentorship 101” will focus
on the importance of mentors
for business success, and how
one can find mentors and set
up successful mentor relation-
ships. The seminar is open to
all businesses in the Florence
area — not just startups and
entrepreneurs.
“I believe everyone should
mentor and be mentored,” said
Cummings. “I attribute much
of my success to the mentors
I’ve found and worked with
over the years.”

He found Treon a location,
Community Baptist Church,
and even loaned her a piano to
use temporarily and lessons
began.
Over the years, Treon pro-
moted and taught her pre-
school program, Polly Panda
Music, her Kinder Keyboard
Classes and private piano les-
sons at the church.
During road closures, she
drove logging roads and
stayed overnight one night a
week with clients in Florence.
At times she made the trip to
Florence three times a week.
Treon has hosted piano
recitals twice a year and
brought
Oregon

adjudicators to evaluate her
students in Florence.
“Florence has been very
good to me, and I will miss my
families and students here,”
said Treon. “I have plenty of
students at my house in Seal
Rock. I’m not retiring from
teaching piano, but I am retir-
ing from driving 70 miles
round trip to do it.”
