R ECEPTION TO BE HELD FOR FLORENCE — Last December, Best of Show winners in the Little Dickens Miniature contest were husband and wife Rosy and Pancho Clark. They are being honored with their own show at Backstreet Gallery, 1421 Bay St., begin- ning with a special gallery reception Saturday, April 9, from 3 to 5 p.m. Even though these winners exhibited miniature pieces for the Dicken’s show their new pieces are not restricted to small works. You’ll be excited to see their full size art. Best of Show 2-D recipient was Rosy Clark for her tiny rendition of “Simple Pleasures,” a delightful watercolor. Around town, you may have seen Rosy’s marvelous wall murals. In addition she paints in oils, however, her present focus is on watercolors. ‘Best Shell Seeker’ is done in watercolor on Yupo paper, a very difficult medium. For Best of Show 3D, Pancho created an innovative sculptural piece forged from stainless steel. Pancho is well known in Florence for his ingenuity and diversity of media in his sculptures that could stand alone, hang from the ceiling, or a wall. The pieces are impressive whether they are executed as tiny sculptures or quite large works. Made of carbon and steel, turn the han- dle and watch this “Kinetic Horse” run. Prior writing experience isn’t required. “The workshop is designed for people interested in telling stories involving their lives,” Welch said. “It’s aimed for everyone from the ‘always wanted to write, but don’t know where to begin’ writer to the person, who seeing the tick- ing clock, wants to have their memoir 1 0 • C OAST book printed — and soon.” As part of the workshop, Welch will present 18 key questions mem- oirists should consider when start- ing a project. He’ll also show participants how simple and inexpensive it is to cre- ate a book. Short writing assign- ments designed to jumpstart the cre- ative process and help writers define their project goals are also part of the workshop. “The atmosphere will be relaxed, fun and affirming,” Welch said. Welch is the author of 20 books and though retired from The Register-Guard, continues to share his Oregon Life columns with read- ers.
