Whale Watch volunteers will be available at overlooks all along the coast, as well as at the Cape Perpetua Visitors Center, to help visitors spot whales and share information from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Saturday, March 26. Gray whales are traveling past Cape Perpetua as they make their way north to their summer feeding grounds near Alaska. This past winter, more than 1,600 whales were sighted by Whale Watch volunteers along the Oregon Coast during the whales’ southern migration. Films and interpretive mate- rials about gray whales also are available at the visitor center. Whale Watch Week is part of Oregon State Park’s Whale Watch Spoken Here program. All presentations and events at Cape Perpetua are free, but a Northwest Forest Pass, Oregon Coast Passport, federal recre- ation pass or $5 day-use fee is required within the Cape On the Bite Perpetua Scenic Area. AT Siuslaw News O nly one week into this year’s track season, and four mem- bers of the Siuslaw girls 4x400 relay team have already made Viking history. This past Saturday at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Portland, Siuslaw runners Morgan Bingham, Destinie Tatum, Annmarie Precht and Mikaela Siegel were among the 144 prep sprinters making up the 36 teams competing in a special high school relay competition held in conjunction with the championships at the Oregon Convention Center. It was the first time in the event’s 30-year history that prep athletes had the opportunity to race on the same track as some of the world’s best track and field athletes vying for a spot in the Olympics. Siuslaw’s 4x400 girls relay team ran in one of six heats included in the final three days of the four-day world-class meet, with teams competing in one of three divisions: 1A/4A, 5A/6A and Invitational, which included teams from throughout the Pacific Northwest, including Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The team made history Saturday night, winning the special 1A/4A race during the IAAF World Track and Field Championships at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Bingham, Tatum, Precht and Siegel ran in the 1A/4A division, finishing 4 minutes, 13.23 seconds to win the event and land a 10-second improve- ment over their winning time at Thursday’s home opener on Hans Petersen Field. Their wining time in Portland also beat out returning state champion Phoenix, which finished second. During Thursday’s Siuslaw Icebreaker, the same foursome ran a 4:23.93, finishing 18 seconds ahead of second-place North Bend. Other 1A/4A schools that competed Saturday included East Linn Christian Academy of Lebanon, Newport, Molalla and Union high schools. 8:49am / 0.6 8:48pm / 1.9 March 27 2:48am / 7.0 3:37pm/ 6.0 9:26am / 0.7 9:20pm/ 2.3 March 28 3:20am / 6.9 4:24pm/ 5.7 10:06am / 0.8 9:56pm/ 2.7 March 29 3:56am / 6.7 5:19pm/ 5.4 10:53am / 1.0 10:39pm/ 3.1 S IUSLAW N EWS 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 Alder Drive One of the most peaceful, secluded lots just minutes from town.
