6 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 2016 Library Tidings News about the Siuslaw Public Library Library Tidings, a regular feature of the Siuslaw News, features news about upcoming Siuslaw Public Library pro- grams for adults and children, new books and videos, and other library news of interest to the community. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Gallows Thief By Bernard Cornwell Book review by Susie Voth Bernard Cornwell is known for his exemplary, well- researched historic novels. He has written 43 historical novels in 25 years. That is an amazing statistic! He writes series as well as stand-alone novels. Gallows Thief is a stand- alone, historical mystery. Rider Sandman is a hero of Waterloo. His reputation as a military man is untarnished, except perhaps for his temper, which could be as “fierce as a summer storm of lightning and thunder.” The reputation of his father however is not untarnished. When faced with imprisonment or exile because of massive debts, Sandman’s father took his own life, leaving his wife and two children ruined. Sandman is forced to sell his commission to provide for his mother and sister. He is puzzled when he receives a letter requesting he call on Lord Sidmouth, the Home Secretary, at his earliest convenience. Had his father cheated the Viscount Sidmouth? For what reason is his attendance required? It is the offer of a job, a tem- porary job, but for Sandman, any job will do. Charles Corday is accused of killing the Countess of Avebury. He has been tried and judged and sentenced to death by hanging. Corday is the son of Maisie Cruttwell, seamstress to the Queen and as such, the Queen has intervened on her behalf. The Home Secretary needs a man to investigate and discover if Corday is indeed guilty of the crime for which he has been con- demned. Sandman along with a crew of faithful friends embark on the mission of discovering the truth. It is a long and sometimes hazardous journey. For the read- er, it is a rollicking ride. Tip of the Week: Contacting the library online If you find yourself wanting to contact the library when the library is closed or don’t have time to call or visit, or if you are Starlight Cabaret to host musician, singer Lovejoy online with the library’s website (www.siuslawlibrary.info) and want to ask us to purchase a book, or let us know about a problem with your account, or have a concern or compliment, there is a very easy way to mes- sage us. From the library’s main web- page, hover over “About” near the top of the page and you will see “Contact Us” appear on the drop down menu. Click on that and you will be brought to a page where you can “Contact a Librarian/Ask a Question,” “Share a Compliment, Suggestion, or Concern,” and “Make a Purchase Request.” After entering your informa- tion, click “Send” and an email is sent immediately to the Reference Desk. As soon as the library is open, the reference librarian reads all messages received and deals with them promptly or distributes them to the appropriate staff member for action. Next week’s tip: What happens to book (or other material) pur- chase requests. Jeff Lovejoy will be per- forming at the next Starlight Cabaret set for Wednesday, March 16, at the Florence Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Lovejoy has played in bands, duos and trios for more than 45 years in Massachusetts, New York, Maine and Colorado. He’s also played solo over the years, from dance music in clubs, to lighter fare for dinner music. Lovejoy played a wide mix in November to an audi- ence that did a lot of singing along, including music from The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot. This time, he plans a little more ’60s music and a tad more danceable rock. The music begins at 6 p.m. at the FUUF, on Highway 101 at Heceta Beach Road. COURTESY PHOTO Jeff Lovejoy Tea and coffee will be pro- vided, or BYOB if over age 21 Finger foods are welcome. The event is free to the pub- lic, but love donations will be accepted.
