SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9, 2016 OBITUARIES HENRY—Stella “Joyce” Henry, lived April 5, 1939, to Jan. 18, 2 0 1 6 . M o m , Sister, Nana and “Hi- Pockets” as dad called her, passed a w a y peacefully Joyce Henry at Peace- H e a l t h Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend at 3:10 a.m. She is survived by her loving husband, James M. Henry; they would have been married 52 years Jan. 31. Joyce had four children: Sheila Rae Henry, Allen Ray, (who proceeded her in death in 1963), William Charles Henry and Gayle Anona Henry; five grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. She last worked in retail and at Fred Meyer, in Florence, where she retired from. The Henrys moved to Florence about 30 years ago and Joyce enjoyed gardening flow- ers and vegetables. Lately, she loved to watch the birds, squirrels and other ani- mals along the Siuslaw River from her front window. The birds and squirrels really miss her — no more sun flower seeds. There will be a private family memorial at a later date. The family wishes to express its love and a heartfelt “thank you” to the wonderful staff at South Hills Rehab Center in Eugene; we are so grateful to you all and to the staff at RiverBend, who made Joyce’s last days comfortable. Thank you so much. MORGAN—Shawn E. Morgan, 48, of Florence, died Feb. 28, 2016. He was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., the only son of Karen V. Morgan- Loren. Shawn He was Morgan educated in the Siuslaw School District, graduating with the class of 1985. He then proceeded to UTI (Universal Technical Institute) and graduated with an automo- tive degree. He began working with the Florence Police Department in 1998 after Officer Siewell sug- gested that he should apply. Shawn proudly served the community of Florence for 17 years. He dedicated his life to helping and influencing others. During his time with the City of Florence, he served as a school resource officer and patrol officer. He was promoted to sergeant in the fall of 2015. While off-duty, Shawn enjoyed fishing, hunting, off- roading, classic cars, hotrod shows and working on his 1973 Z28 RS Camero. He leaves behind his beloved sons, Aaron and Justin; his wife, Gretchen; his first grandson Grant Erik Morgan (who is on the way); his sister, Shanna, and her husband Todd; and nieces Ashlyn and Amber. He is also survived by his grandmother, Ronnie DuVarney, and stepfather, Bob Loren. A celebration of his life will be held at the Siuslaw High School gymnasium, 2975 Oak St., Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m. A life departed much too soon; a life lived with passion and compassion; and a life that was loved by so many. D AV I D S O N — D o n - L e e Meyer Davidson, 85, long-time resident and business owner in the Florence and Mapleton area, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2016. Don-Lee was born April 5, 1930, in Gig Harbor Wash., to Arthur Sherman and Freidabourg Christine Dagefoerde Davidson. The family moved to Mapleton in 1942. Don graduated as Salutatorian from Mapleton H i g h School in 1949 and enrolled at Oregon S t a t e University, first in the School of engineering Don-Lee and then Davidson education before settling on the forestry. On Dec. 26, 1950, he married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Beck, also a Mapleton graduate. He graduated from OSU in 1954 and was the top graduate from the School of Forestry that year. Don-Lee served a tour in the U.S. Army from 1954-56, sta- tioned in Augsburg, Germany, with an honorable discharge on May 12, 1956. Upon return to Mapleton, he joined his dad in the manage- ment of Davidson Industries, a sawmill established in 1954. He became president and general manager in 1960, and dedicated himself to the business, industry and people of Mapleton for decades to follow. Don-Lee served on many boards, both in the timber indus- try and otherwise, including: president of the National Forest Products Association, president of the Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau, director and president of the Columbia River Log Scaling and Grading Bureau, and founding share- holder and first vice-president of Siuslaw Valley Bank. Don-Lee was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Sherm Jr.; his sister, Gretchen Crowell; and his wife, Gloria. He is survived by his daugh- ter, Heidi (Dale) Sause; his son, Phil (Sue) Davidson; six grand- children: Cory, Taylor and Caitlin Sause, Amber (Greg) Ferrari, Matt and A.J. Davidson; and three great-grandchildren: Samuel Director Schnitzer, Sofia Ferrari and Allie Ferrari. Much to the astonishment of everyone who knew him, he is also survived by his beloved 1995 blue Jeep that dutifully took him everywhere he needed to go. “Old Blue” has 346,997 miles, and countless dents. Don-Lee will be remem- bered for his fierce loyalty to his employees and the commu- nity, an ever present spirit of generosity, and as a man of his word. A private burial is planned. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, to be deter- mined. Donations can be made in his name to the Mapleton Community Foundation, PO Box 237, Mapleton, OR 97453. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, with private interment at Pacific Sunset Cemetery. STANGE—Derald W. Stange, 87, of Florence, former- ly of Lebanon, Ore., passed away the morning of March 2, 2016, at OHSU Hospital. Derald was born April 12, 1929, in Velva, N.D., to William Stange and Emma Bartz. He spent his early life in Stratford, S.D., and Los Angeles, Calif. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17, serving aboard the USS Iowa and USS Columbus. A genetic disease, Leber Hereditary Optical Neuropathy (LHON), took his eyesight at age 21. Derald never let his blindness become a disability and went on to work as a small appliance repairman for Goodwill and Sears. He also ranched in Eastern Oregon, operated a dairy farm in Minnesota, owned a laundromat in California, and retired as a machinist from the Linn Gear Company of Lebanon. Derald enjoyed going to the horse races, fishing, playing cards, traveling and, most of all, spending time with his family and friends. He was a joy to know and made everyone he met feel like they were the most important person in the world. He will be missed by all that knew him. Derald is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edna; his son, David Stange (Carol); his daughters: Linda Brush (Les) and Coral Hutchcraft (Glen); his sister, Geraldine Hansen; his brothers: Charles Stange, Carl Burke and Robert Burke; grand- children: Michelle Stange, Caroline Stange-Foundation, James Buckingham, Greg Buckingham and Cheryl Edwards; three great-grandchil- dren and many nieces and nephews. Brissenden interim Lane County justice of the peace SALEM—Governor Kate Brown announced on March 1 the appointment of Judge Rick Brissenden, of Florence, to fill the position of Justice of the Peace on the Lane County Justice Court.
