Siuslaw Friendship Club to elect new officers The Siuslaw Friendship Club will elect new officers for the 2016-17 year at its March 10 meeting. The nomi- nations are: President Janet Van Kleek, vice-president Pam Thompson, secretary Jeanette Bratcher, and treasurer Dee Darrow. The club meets on the sec- ond Thursday of the month, September through June, for lunch and a general meeting at the Elks Club, beginning at 11 a.m. A primary goal of the club is raising funds to support Florence charities such as Food Share, Food Backpacks for Kids, Siuslaw Outreach Services (SOS) and the Florence Area Humane Society (FAHS). In addition to luncheons and fund raisers, the club sponsors card games: five crowns on Tuesday, pinochle on Thursday, and hand-and-foot on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. The Women’s History Month 2016 theme is Honoring Women in Public Service and Government. BM3 Crosley spoke about the history of women in the Coast Guard and various opportunities the Coast Guard provides women today. Women were first officially assigned as lighthouse keepers as early as the mid-19th centu- ry. In 1881, female Lime Rock lighthouse keeper Ida Lewis was awarded the rare and pres- tigious Gold Lifesaving medal for her heroics. The ongoing history reveals exceptionally strong role models, giving today’s Coast Guard women inspira- tion and a vision of what they can — and do — accomplish. Currently, there are five active-duty women assigned to Station Siuslaw River in vari- ous roles, with additional female members in the local Coast Guard Flotilla. It is a nonprofit organization that pro- motes historic preservation, education and patriotism. Members are directly descended from patriots involved in the Revolutionary War.
