The local Oregon Dunes
chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution kicked
off National Women’s History
Month on Friday, Feb. 26, with
guestspeaker Boatswain’s Mate
Brooke Crosley from the U.S.
Coast Guard Station Siuslaw
River.
The Women’s History
Month 2016 theme is Honoring
Women in Public Service and
Government. BM3 Crosley
spoke about the history of
women in the Coast Guard and
various opportunities the Coast
Guard provides women today.
Women were first officially
assigned as lighthouse keepers
as early as the mid-19th centu-
ry. In 1881, female Lime Rock
lighthouse keeper Ida Lewis
was awarded the rare and pres-
tigious Gold Lifesaving medal
for her heroics.
Surprisingly, women were
not fully integrated into active-

duty status until 1973, by act of
Congress. The ongoing history
reveals exceptionally strong
role models, giving today’s
Coast Guard women inspira-
tion and a vision of what they
can — and do — accomplish.
Currently, there are five
active-duty women assigned to
Station Siuslaw River in vari-
ous roles, with additional
female members in the local
Coast Guard Flotilla.

WHEN YOU ARE ON THE ROAD
COUNT TO THREE
Leave extra room behind the car in front of you in case a
sudden stop is necessary. Using telephone poles as a
landmark, start counting once the car in front of you
passes a specific pole. If you pass the same pole before
you can count to three, you're following too closely.
