COM WEDNESDAY EDITION ❘ MARCH 2, 2016 ❘ SECTION B Siuslaw News Sports & Recreation B&G Club expanding softball program Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County is expanding its girls fastpitch softball program. Until this season, the pro- gram has only fielded a U14 team made up of sixth- through eighth-grade girls. After speaking with a few of the softball leagues on the coast, the B&G Club has decided to expand with the goal of having enough play- ers for three teams: a U10, U12 and U14 team. The program is looking for girls grades 3 through 8 who are interested in playing soft- ball. Must be age 9 by April 1, 2016 to participate. Practices will start in April, with games starting in May. The B&G Club will be hosting and traveling to play teams from Waldport, Coos Bay, North Bend, Reedsport, Bandon and Coquille. Uniforms have been designed and are waiting to be ordered. The program is also look- ing for coaches, umpires and any local businesses that are interested in sponsoring a team. The cost to play is $100 per player, and includes the cost of the uniform. Participants must be a cur- rent Boys and Girls Club member (a $25 annual fee). The B&G Club has income-based scholarships available. S PORTS T WO V IKS PIN STATE MEDALS B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News Four Vikings earned their way to the OSAA state tournament mats last weekend at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, and two came home with hardware for Siuslaw. Senior 220-pounder Dylan Jennings earned the Viks 16 team points over two days of wrestling that began with wins by fall over Bronson Holthusen of Astoria and Dalton Doerfler of Sweet Home. Dylan took Holthusen in just 1:53 minutes, then Doerfler in 3:29 minutes. The wins advanced him into his third match on day two, where he lost 12-2 to Crook County’s Brogan Howard. Jennings came back to defeat Justin Crum of Sutherlin, 4-2, in the consola- tion round, earning him a chance at third place against Louie Sanchez of Cascade. After a virtual stalemate during the first two rounds, Jennings was taken down and lost by fall to Sanchez in 5:19 minutes, to finishing fourth over- all. A March 14 • SHS BASEBALL HOSTS C. At 116 pounds, sophomore grappler Ricky Huff had a full dance card Saturday, facing off in four matches after going 1-1 the day before. He opened the tournament with a 6-0 loss to Jace Hays of Baker, then battled back in spectacular fashion against another Baker wrestler, Dawson Dollarhide, for a 14-3 major decision. Saturday, Huff began the day with another major decision after defeating Kyle McConkey of North Marion, 12- 0. The sophomore continued on with another victory after taking down Tillamook’s Cameron Reeves with a sudden victory 3-1 win. Fishing for the various warm water fish species tends to be slower during the winter months. There are numerous lakes in the Florence area that can pro- vide good opportunity and have both boat and bank access. SIUSLAW RIVER: Steelhead The winter steelhead fishery is fair to good for Siuslaw alum pitches shutout for Beavers Beavers pitcher and Siuslaw alumn Jake Thompson struck out seven in a 14-0 shutout Friday against Kansas State. B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News ARIZONA — After finishing a promising freshman outing for the Beavers’ baseball team early last March due to a back sprain, Siuslaw alumn and red-shirt OSU sophomore Jake Thompson brought spectators to their feet last Friday at Surprise Stadium in Arizona. After pitching a five-hitter and striking out seven Kansas State Jayhawks in 6 2/3 innings, Thompson left the mound to a standing ovation for his perform- ance, which helped solidify an impressive 14-0 shutout over Kansas. The Beavers downed the Jayhawks twice more over the weekend, winning 9-3 and 3-1. Earlier in the week, the Beavers rallied against two Kansas State leads before clipping the Jayhawks 7-5 on a 3-RBI triple from Caleb Hamilton in the eighth inning for the win. Currently, the Beavers ar ranked No. 5 as they continue preseason play. COURTESY PHOTO/OSU BASEBALL Calendar U PCOMING On the Bite Bottom fishing topic for tonight’s STEP meeting Bottom fishing for ling cod and hal- ibut off the central Oregon coast will be the topic at tonight’s meeting of the Florence Salmon and Trout Enhancement Program (STEP). The group meets at 7 p.m. in the Elks Lodge on 12th Street in Florence. The public is invited to attend. Local fishing guide and Florence area native David Huntington will share his knowledge and experience with fishing for these tasty bottom fish. He will bring some examples of the set-ups he uses to attract halibut and ling cod to the line. The veteran angler and guide also plans to share tips on how to set up on a drift and what the bottom structure of the ocean floor should look like in tar- geting halibut and ling cod. A short business meeting will pre- cede Huntington’s talk. Reports from the activities at Whittaker Creek trap and the group’s Munsel Creek Hatchery will be shared. Other club business will be dis- cussed and fishing reports for success- es of catching winter steelhead or newly planted trout will be shared. D ISCOVERY S ERIES TRAVERSES A MANDA ’ S T RAIL S ATURDAY YACHATS — The pain and brutality of the forced relocation of several coastal tribes is embodied by the story of a tribeswoman known today only as “Amanda.” Amanda, blind and forcibly separat- ed from her 8-year-old daughter, was marched with other displaced Indians from their south-central Coastal territo- ries to the Alsea sub-agency relocation camp near Yachats in 1864. Stumbling repeatedly over the rocky headland of Cape Perpetua, the blood shed from her injured feet was so pro- fuse, an escorting soldier later wrote it was “sufficient to track her by.” A trail along the northern face of the promon- tory within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area now bares her name. “Amanda: How A Trail Brought Truth, Reconciliation and Collaboration To A Divided People” retraces the har- rowing plight faced by coastal tribes during the era of white resettlement. It will be the topic of the next Winter Discovery Series at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center, 2400 S. Highway 101, three miles south of Yachats.
