SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2016 3 B Annual Fly Fishing expo returning to Reedsport On Feb. 27, bring your fam- ily to the annual Fly Fishing Expo at the Reedsport City Hall at 451 Winchester Ave., in Reedsport. The expo has been offered to the public annually for the past 25 years by the Lower Umpqua Flycasters organization at no charge and offers fun for the whole family. Open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be more than 24 expert fly tiers demonstrating their craft, and explaining the different flys and showing how to create them. Children and adults are encouraged to learn how to cast in the indoor casting pool with expert assistance from interna- tionally know flycaster, Frank Moore. Presenters include Ralph Glazier on steelhead fly tying and fishing, and Lloyd Thurman, who will discuss Oregon lake fly fishing. Specialists from the Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP), the Tenmile Lake Basin Partnership and ODFW of Coos County will have booths at the expo to answer questions about their programs. Some of the newest and best in fly fishing equipment will be on view at the expo including flys, rods and float boats. Other exhibitors include wild flower exhibits, fishing antiques, bamboo rods, fly tying equipment and even fish art. This free annual expo is an educational and fun family event with raffle drawings every hour throughout the day, a silent auction, and a conces- sion stand for meals and snacks. The Lower Umpqua Flycasters is a nonprofit fly fishing club based in Reedsport. It was founded in 1990 to accommodate persons with all levels of fly fishing and fly tying skills. Club meetings and special sessions have featured activi- ties including fly tying, rod building, construction of fish- ing leaders, fly casting and fishing outings. In addition the club hosts an annual Tube-O- Rama float trip on the Umpqua River. This organization works with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on projects that pertain to the conservation and restoration of coastal streams and the enhancement of local fisheries. With 40 seconds left before the half, Douglas drained its first 3- pointer to move ahead 18-15. Mitchell moved to the top of the arc with 9 seconds left, then let loose with a buzzer beater to tie things at 18-18 heading into half- time. The Trojans went on to nar- rowly outscore the Vikings 10-8 in the third quarter, with 6 of those points coming off of a pair of 3-pointers for a 28-26 lead. The fourth quarter was a mir- ror image of the third, with the Vikings outscoring the Trojans 9- 7. A free throw from Reavis tied the game at 35-35 with a little over a minute remaining. Both teams got a good look at the basket in the final minute, but neither was able to secure a lead before the final buzzer erupted in regulation. With 4 minutes back on the clock, the game entered overtime, with Reavis scoring 4 of his game-high 17 points. Unfortunately, they were also the only points for the Viks as Douglas pulled away on 5 free throws and a jumper, outscoring Siuslaw 7-4 and securing a 42-39 win. Along with Reavis, the Viks also got 10 points from Siegel, 6 points from Mitchell and 5 from Brandt. Last night, Siuslaw finished its season on the road (after press deadlines) at North Bend. Sailors half foul for the Eagles. In the second half, the teams were evenly matched as the Sailors were forced to play tenta- tively off the glass. After giving up the lead 36-35 neat the end of the fourth period, Mapleton dug deep. “We fought back, pulled ahead and never looked back,” said Crook. “It was our most impressive win of the season.” Along with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals from Hunter Simington, the Sailors also had outstanding post work from sophomore Dominic Wells with 11 rebounds, 7 points, 4 steals and 1 blocked shot. Junior post Nick Smith had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 blocked shots. Freshman wing Evan Moso had 6 rebounds, 4 points and 1 steal. Junior guard Tyler Packebush had 2 rebounds, 1 point and 1 steal. Unfortunately, the Sailors’ run ended after falling to the Indians at Mohawk High School during Thursday night’s second round of league playoffs, 53-35. The Indians will play for third place and a state playoff spot against Lowell today at Central Linn High School. “What I was really proud of is how this team came together and played its best basketball when it mattered most,” said Crook. “The last games were ‘win or go home,’ and they never looked better.” from 1B Once again, Simington led the team’s offensive momentum, scoring 25 points for the second time that week. Off the glass, freshman Gabe Simington domi- nated the paint, nabbing 15 rebounds and scoring 12 points. “Gabe’s rebounding and put- back shots gave us a lot of sec- ond-chance points,” said Crook.
