SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2016 Police from 1A “Don Schug was found just before 11 a.m. this morning by an engaged citizen near Sears. She provided Schug with some warm clothing, food and called the police. He has been reunited with his family,” FPD said Monday. “Thank you to all our com- munity partners and citizens who assisted in the search,” said Florence public informa- tion officer Megan Messmer. “I would just like to shout a huge thank you to the (respon- ders),” said Florence Mayor Joe Henry at the city council meet- 11 A ing Monday night. “The elderly man, who is a friend of mine, was missing overnight and spent the night outside. A great big thanks to the Good Samaritan who located him and gave him some warm clothing and contacted police. “I think that’s just an exam- ple of our community and the caring and compassion that went out from our citizens. It’s just awesome. I’m just glad to live in Florence, let alone be mayor.” __________ Follow Chantelle on Twitter @SNews_Chantelle. Email her at cmeyer@thesiuslawnews.com. Write Off Tax Time Stress! Make Your Appointment Now! from 1A The movie, which recounts the real life story of an incredible Coast Guard res- cue off Cape Cod in the early 1950s, is an awe-inspiring tribute to the guard of yester- year and today. Station Siuslaw River Senior Chief Tim Tregoning, who introduced the movie at the public premiere, stated “I am excited to see a movie that not only honors Coast Guard heroes we strive to emulate, but also directly reflects and relates with our mission here on the Oregon coast, with some of the most treacherous waters in the country.” For over two centuries, the U.S. Coast Guard has safe- guarded the nation’s coast- lines, waterways and lakes. Coast Guard stations along the central Oregon coast exe- cute a full range of missions, including search and rescue, boat safety education, marine environmental protection, law enforcement and a myriad of other duties that involve mar- itime safety and security. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River was estab- lished in 1917. The station averages approximately 250 cases a year, several involving the escort of vessels across an often difficult ocean/river bar to navigate. The Coast Guard’s motto “Semper Paratus” is exempli- fied by the local guard, meaning “Always Ready.” Many Coast Guard mem- bers are involved in commu- nity activities, in addition to their military duty. A number of them are vol- unteer firefighters for Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue. The two agencies work together, and several fire department members also attended the movie premiere. Perkins loans differ from other student loans because the government loans the money directly to the school. The school then loans the money to the students and when the loans are repaid, the school may then re-loan the money to another student. “Most community colleges have never done Perkins loans because of the administrative burdens,” Pierson said. “What made it difficult for Lane and other community colleges that did administer the Perkins loans, after it was finally reauthorized, is that they changed it so that stu- dents have to have Stafford loans first. For most communi- ty colleges, costs are low enough that almost no one exceeds the Stafford loan cap,” he added. Federal Stafford loans are the loans most college students receive. One of the historically unique aspects of the Perkins loan was its ability to be for- given in exchange for certain types of public service. “All direct loans are now available for public service loan forgiveness,” Faith said, “and are also eligible for a variety of income-driven repayment plans that help cap the amount students pay each month and helps to contain the interest that accrues on those loans while the students are repaying.” According to Faith, LCC will continue to service all the Perkins loans it has issued and has not decided to liquidate the Perkins loan program. “Regardless of whether or not LCC liquidates the Perkins Loan program, the loans would continue to be serviced in accordance with the terms of the promissory note,” she said. “If the Perkins loan port- folio is liquidated, the loans would be assigned to the U.S. Department of Education, which uses the same servicer that the college uses to service the loans. “Students would likely not even notice any transition if this were to occur.” __________ Independent, Professional Services Loan Holloway and Associates, LLC CPA’s 733 Highway 101, (across from Safeway) • 541- 997-3434 nal additio cost!
