THE ART OF ACRYLICS FROM COOS BAY — Embark on a journey into the fun and rewarding world of acrylic painting with Allen “Tony” Adams at the Coos Art Museum. The Acrylic Painting classes will take place Tuesdays, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24, and Dec. 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Adams provides an introduction to acrylics, painting techniques and familiar- izes both the beginning artist and artists already using acrylics in the preparation of the painting surface, application of the medium and selecting a palette. Each session will consist of a short painting demonstration by the instructor followed by a question and answer period. The remainder of each session will be spent with students working on their own paintings, during which time Adams will work one-on-one with each student shar- ing helpful information he has gained in 60 years of painting in both commercial and fine arts. Recognized as one of the area’s premier realist painters, Adams’ qualifications include time spent as a screen cartoonist at Walt Disney Studios and 30 years as an illustrator and graphic designer at General South Coast Folk Week is sponsored by the Coquille Tribal Community Fund, New Community Coalition, Ocean Ridge Assisted Living, 7 Devils Brewing Company, Wavecrest Discoveries, Bayside Terrace K-DOCK 92.9, Cedar Electric The Liberty Pub, Play it Forward, and The Guild. YELLOW COURTESY PHOTO CYAN BAY AREA — Learn how to swing your partner, pick a tune for dancers or lead a group in a sing-along during South Coast Folk Week Oct. 4-10. It’s a week of contra dances, concerts, singing and workshops for people of all ages who want to have fun with tradition- al American song, music and dance. The South Coast Folk Society is pre- senting South Coast Folk Week with help from its affiliated national organization, the Country Dance and Song Society. The Country Dance and Song Society chose the South Coast Folk Society as one of six communities in North America to throw a week-long festival to celebrate the nation- al organization’s 100th anniversary. The Country Dance and Song Society is sending Bob Dalsemer, a dance caller, and Firefly, a string band, from North Carolina to the South Coast for Folk Week. By day, Dalsemer and his band will visit local schools and introduce high school and college students to contra dance, a traditional American dance form similar to square dancing. Evening activities for the whole com- munity include three contra dances, con- certs, and a sing-along. Dalsemer and Firefly will also teach workshops about how to lead groups in singing, how to play music for dancers, how to be a better con- tra dancer and how to get started as a con- tra dance caller. Absolutely no experience is needed to attend the contra dances or sing-alongs; if you can walk, you can contra dance. The caller walks you through every dance; just wear comfortable clothes and clean shoes. All events are admission by donation. BLACK ‘Firefly’ to headline South Coast Folk Week
