E MILY A SHWORTH R ETROSPECTIVE COOS BAY — “Vivid,” “Electrifying,” and “Bold” are just some of the words that have been used to describe the art works of Emily Ashworth, a longtime resident of North Bend and cultural leader on the South Coast. A retrospective will open at Coos Art Museum on Friday, Oct. 9, and run through Dec. 5. This will be her first solo- exhibition at the museum. Emily Ashworth was born in Florida and graduated from the University of Tampa. After service in the Women’s Army Corps, working in medical lab- oratories, teaching school, rais- ing children and leading a live- ly and exciting political life which included running for Governor of Oregon. After all that, then she dis- covered art. COURTESY PHOTO Learn the art technique of Zentangle COOS BAY — Join Certified Zentangle teacher Rosie Hill will be at Coos Art Museum on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., for “Paradox Play, a Zentangle Class.” Learning new tangles is fun, but exploring the possibilities of just one tangle can be very satisfying. This class will focus on the tangle, “Rick’s Paradox.” Discover how drawing lines can result in beautiful spirals, and how filling in different shapes can yield amazing designs. Participants are required to bring a black Micron 01 pen, 2B pencil (or soft- er) and a tortillion. Zentangle books and other supplementary materials will be available for purchase. Teens and adults of all skill levels are welcome. Class size is limited to 16 par- ticipants. Class Fee is $30 fo CAM members, or $35 for nonmembers. For inspiration, she avoids mate- rial reality and instead taps into the extraordinary images of her creative mind, producing paintings which are abstract in nature, free of struc- ture, and follow their own rules. In the creation of her larger prints a small acrylic original is painted. Then the image is digitally expand- ed, pulled and enlarged to create a gicleé print many times the original size. A free public opening reception will take place Oct. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m., and all are invited to attend and meet the artist. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Museum admission: $5 general, $2 students, veterans and seniors, free to museum members. Fall Fling to include Old West murder mystery COOS BAY — Mark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Coos Bay Art Museum doors open at 5 p.m. for a night of intrigue and entertainment as the museum presents “This Town Ain’t Big Enough.” Set in the Old West, this dinner and mystery, will have you exercising your sleuthing skills while enjoy- ing a delicious buffet dinner prepared by Benetti’s Restaurant. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the period and help set the stage for the Old West. The evening also offers an opportunity to acquire original works by some of the finest artists in the Bay Area. A wide variety of other quality goods and servic- es donated by generous local businesses and individuals will also be available for your bid. The Fall Fling Fundraiser is a great way to become acquainted with the Coos Art Museum and to help sup- port its worthwhile programs.
