On the mound for Florence, Kyle Springer dominated the plate, allowing only two hits after coming in for four innings of relief. Springer’s pitching per- formance, coupled with an aggressive Sandblasters offense and a pair of Roseburg errors created a scoring tri-fecta for Florence. In addition to earning the win on the mound, Springer also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to help secure the victory. Yesterday, the Sandblasters were in Eugene for more nonleague action, taking on the Eugene Challengers for a double- header (after deadlines). Saturday, Florence will be at Regis High School to take on the Canyon Crushers for a nine-inning game at 2 p.m. NORTH COAST LAKES: Lost Lake received some surplus trout last week. Coastwide advisory issued for soft-shell clams The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) has issued a health advisory for the length of the Oregon coast for soft-shell clams because they contain high levels of naturally occurring arsenic. The advisory is most important for people who dig their own clams and target the specific species Mya arenar- ia, since these clams are not commer- cially available in markets or restau- rants. The advisory recommends remov- ing the skin from the siphon, or “neck,” of soft-shell clams before eat- ing them. Soft-shell clams are found primarily in estuary and intertidal regions of the Oregon coast. This advisory stems from tests the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) performed on a variety of shellfish species collected along the Oregon coast as part of its Water Quality Toxics Monitoring Program. DEQ’s tests found that when ana- lyzed whole without the shell, soft- shell clams contained unusually high levels of inorganic arsenic. Most of the arsenic was concentrat- ed in the skin covering the clam’s siphon. Researchers found that by removing the skin covering the siphon before eating, the arsenic can be great- ly reduced, to levels that are not harm- ful. Arsenic levels varied along the Oregon coast: Clams on the north See T IDE T ABLE Entrance Siuslaw River High Tide July 15 1:07am / 6.0 Low Tide 6:37am / -1.3 6:30pm / 2.2 July 16 12:20am / 7.6 7:16am / -1.2 1:46pm / 6.2 7:14pm / 2.1 July 17 1:01am / 7.4 2:22pm / 6.2 7:53am /-1.2 7:57pm / 2.0 July 18 1:41am / 7.1 2:57pm / 6.3 8:29am / -0.9 8:38pm / 2.0 July 19 2:21am / 6.7 3:32am / 6.2 9:03am /-0.5 9:21pm / 2.0 July 20 3:01am / 6.2 4:07pm / 6.2 9:37am / 0.0 10:06pm / 1.9 July 21 3:44am / 5.8 4:44pm / 6.2 10:12am / 0.5 10:56pm / 1.9 S S IUSLAW IUSLAW N EWS 148 Maple St. Florence 541-997-3441 ADVISORY 2B P RICE R EDUCTION TO $210,000...
