The

Sandblasters,
Florence’s
American Legion Triple-A
baseball team, swung the bats
well in Roseburg over the
weekend, stringing together
nine hits in a 7-6 non-league
victory against Doc Stewarts
on Sunday.
On the mound for
Florence, Kyle Springer
dominated the plate, allowing
only two hits after coming in
for four innings of relief.
Springer’s pitching per-
formance, coupled with an

offense and a pair of
Roseburg errors created a
scoring tri-fecta for Florence.
In addition to earning the
win on the mound, Springer
also contributed at the plate,
going 2-for-3 with a double
and two RBIs to help secure
the victory.
Yesterday,
the
Sandblasters were in Eugene
for more nonleague action,
taking on the Eugene
Challengers for a double-
header (after deadlines).
Saturday, Florence will be
at Regis High School to take
on the Canyon Crushers for a
nine-inning game at 2 p.m.

Master Park, as well as the

Lake in Honeyman State Park, will be
alive with competition this Saturday,
July 18, as sandboarders, both profes-
sional and amateur, gather for the 19th
annual Sand Master Jam — the
longest-running sandboarding compe-
tition in the world.
The competition will begin at Sand
Master Park with the rail slide event,
where ’boarders slide their sand-
boards down steel rails while per-
forming tricks before landing — all of
which are scored by judges.
The drags competition, where sand-
boarders are “dragged” behind dune
buggies and scored on speed and
agility, will also take place at Sand
Master Park before heading to the
dunes at Cleawox Lake for the slalom
competition.
Events will begin at 2 p.m. and
wrap up about 5:30 p.m.
The next Dune Riders International
competition will take place Aug. 15,
when sandboarders take to the air for
the X-West Huck Fest Pro-Am “Big
Air” competition.
Jumps begin at 2 p.m. at Sand
Master Park.
That same day, Sand Master Park
will host a free sand-sculpting work-
shop from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
For more information about
Saturday’s competition or the upcom-
ing X-West Huck Fest, call Sand
Master Park at 541-997-6006, or visit

Coastwide advisory issued for soft-shell clams
The Oregon Health Authority
(OHA) has issued a health advisory
for the length of the Oregon coast for
soft-shell clams because they contain
high levels of naturally occurring
arsenic.
The advisory is most important for
people who dig their own clams and
target the specific species Mya arenar-
ia, since these clams are not commer-
cially available in markets or restau-
rants.
The advisory recommends remov-
ing the skin from the siphon, or
“neck,” of soft-shell clams before eat-
ing them. Soft-shell clams are found
primarily in estuary and intertidal
regions of the Oregon coast. This
advisory stems from tests the Oregon
Department of Environmental Quality
(DEQ) performed on a variety of
shellfish species collected along the
Oregon coast as part of its Water
Quality Toxics Monitoring Program.
DEQ’s tests found that when ana-
lyzed whole without the shell, soft-
shell clams contained unusually high
levels of inorganic arsenic.
Most of the arsenic was concentrat-
ed in the skin covering the clam’s
siphon. Researchers found that by
removing the skin covering the siphon
before eating, the arsenic can be great-
ly reduced, to levels that are not harm-
ful.
Arsenic levels varied along the
Oregon coast: Clams on the north
